No-name sports editor takes charge
Hello, my name is Trevor Padgett and I’ll lx*
your guide through the wonderful world of Uni
versity sports this spring.
I realize The Red & Black sports faithful are
racking their collective brains to try and place
the name.
“Weren’t you the one who covered tennis?”
No, that was Randy Walker.
“Baseball?"
Not me either. Eric Garber handled the di
amond doings.
“Possibly gym nasties?”
Wrong again. Chris Lancette won’t give them
up.
“Aha, the intramural guy!”
Nope, that was Robert McDonald.
Give up yet? I’m the guy who wrote the head
lines and decided what story went where and
with what picture. My official title was Copy
Editor. Yes, I’m the one who changed Henry
Feild Stadium to Henry Field Stadium (an
honest mistake by a first-quarter University
student). Yes, Pm the one who absent-mindedly
screened over a picture in red And yes, I’m the
one who missed every misspelled word you
caught.
I know what you’re thinking: ‘Those are
Trevor
Padgett
hardly credentials to head the sports depart
ment, especially with such fine writers as
Messrs. Walker, Garber and Lancette pulling
seniority.”
OK, so I bribed the management, Charlene
Smith and Amy Bellew, with talk of extensive
coverage of all sports, including the club teams.
I even went as far as to suggest that the lesser-
known varsity sports — men’s and women’s
golf, men’s and women’s track for spring (yes,
we have these teams) — would receive cov
erage. Some people will do anything for a job.
But seriously, the sports department’s aim
this quarter is to broaden the coverage of the
“ugly stepchild” sports, while continuing to
bring you the best coverage of the more well-
known teams. It will take a team effort to make
this goal a reality (you really didn’t think you
could make it through a sports article without
enduring one cliche did you).
My best-of-all-worlds plan goes something
like this:
• A weekly digest will update club sports’
news. However, due to a shortage of available
writers and the obvious large number of club
teams (21 at last count), it will be the responsi
bility of each team to report the happenings
within each respective duo to yours truly.
• The stepchild varsity sports will be covered
in articles — space permitting of course. Assis
tance from the coaches and players will be ap
preciated.
• Intramurals will also be covered on a
weekly basis. Hopefully, Mr. McDonald will
oblige and continue to report the happenings of
the would-be jocks.
I can only hope you enjoy the journey
through sports this quarter. I’ll do my best to
cover it all.

Diamond Dogs take 6
of 8 over spring break
By ERIC GARBER
Sports Writer
The 16th-ranked Diamond
Dogs started their SEC slate over
spring break and now stand and
6-3 in the conference and 26-7
overall.
Georgia won six of eight games
played over the break and finds
itself in sole possession of second
place, just one game behind Mis
sissippi State.
The Diamond Dogs had won
five straight games, including
three straight against confer
ence-rival Auburn at Foley Field
and owned first place in the con
ference before this past week
end’s action.
However, Georgia dropped
both games of a doubleheader
against Vanderbilt Saturday 5-1
and 7-2. Left-hander Dave
Fleming (5-2) and right-hander
Mike Rebhan (6-2) were the two
losing pitchers.
Georgia started its SEC com
petition by knocking off Ken
tucky three Saturdays ago in
Lexington 4-2. This time Fleming
tossed a complete game to pick
up his fourth win.
"I’ve been able to pitch pretty
well lately," Fleming said. “For
tunately, when my fast ball is a
little wild, I’ve been able to come
back with pretty good breaking
pitches."
Fleming, a junior with an ERA
of 3.06, also went the distance in
Georgia’s 14-2 slashing of Au
burn two Saturday’s ago.
Fleming now leads the team with
four complete games.
‘Dave’s success has a lot to do
with his knowledge of the game,"
Georgia coach Steve Webber said.
“He knows how to adjust to ups
and downs."
f Hi Every Sunday, more than 500,000
trees are used to produce the 88°o
of newspapers that are never
recycled. We go through 2.5 million plastic bottles
every hour, only a small percentage of which are now
recycled. Americans throw away enough aluminum
to rebuild our entire commercial airfleet every
three months.
I)o something about
