Contrary to popular belief, the
Rockfish Palace ia alive and
kicking and will continue to be a
force in the Athena musical com
munity.
For the last few months, the
local music scene has been abuzz
with speculation and doomsday
predictions about the future of the
popular downtown nightclub.
The Civic Center Authority an
nounced recently that the site for
its new complex would possibly in
clude the property where the
Rockfish Palace now stands.
J.R. Greene, owner of the
Rockfish Palace, said the County
Commissioner’s office had ba
sically overestimated the amount
of space needed for the new center.
"What happened was the county
had a larger idea of what the civic
center should look like and weren’t
quite sure what they were going to
spend,” Greene said.
new lease on life: Long live the Rockfish Palace
"When they ran into Borne prob
lems and didn't have as much
money as they had planned to
have, they just decided to down-
scale the project and no longer
needed our space,” he said.
Greene said the bottom line is
the civic center will stay on the
other side of Hancock Street and
thus allow the Rockfish to continue
operating at its present location in
definitely.
Greene said the widespread ru
mors of the club’s closing “had
people writing the club ofT in their
minds” and that he haB been asked
repeatedly about the future of the
nightspot, which offers a variety of
entertainment.
He said that after the civic
center iB finished, planners may
again look toward the Rockfish
Palace property as an avenue for
possible expansion or additional
parking, but for now the future of
the club is secure.
'We do plan to fix up the front so
that we aren’t a eyesore to the
center. Well be willing to sink
some more money in once we’re no
tified by the big guys that the/ll
definitely leave us alone," Greene
said.
The news that the Rockfish will
be staying around has come as a re
lief to many loyal club goers.
Joe Hancock, a junior pharmacy
major, said, “I’m really glad to hear
that it’s staying open because I go
there a lot and it's the only place
I've heard any really good blues
bands in Athens. The Rockfish is
just a cool place to be and hear
some of the beet bands in town.”
The Rockfish Palace will cele
brate its newfound stability to
night with a “New Lease On Life”
party. Debra Reece, MisB Lily
Barber and The Healers will be
contributing their soulful blues
music to the festivities. There will
be no cover until 10 p.m. and af
terwards it will be $3. Be sure to
come join in the frolic with other
thankful music lovers.
THE HEALERS:Boogie down with this soulful blues band tonight at the Rockfish Palace,
and join in the "New Lease on Life” celebration of the club’s salvation from the wrecking
ball. The bash begins at 10 p.m.
Malcontent mailman discovers bizarre alternate universe
in a Dead Letter Office in latest thriller from Clive Barker
■ BOOK REVIEW
By JEFF RUTHERFORD
Entertainment Writer
A book review of "The Great and
Secret Show" by Clive Barker. Pub
lished in hardback by Harper &
Row for $19.95
Most horror writers seem con
tent to rewrite the same novel over
and over, but not Clive Barker. He
continues to gleefully shed genre
restraints and venture into un
charted territory.
With his fourth novel “The Great
and Secret Show," Barker drop-
kicks horror literature into the
1990s.
‘The Great and Secret Show,”
the first book of a trilogy, is a fan
tastical epic which spans the globe
and reality.
The novel begins in Omaha, Ne
braska when Randolph Jaffe, a
loner and drifter, starts work at a
dead letter office. As he sorts
through these letters which never
reached their destination, Jaffe
slowly realizes that a certain por
tion of the population are tuned
into a world that exists in coryuc-
tion with ours. These few people
scribble their messages concerning
this secret universe and then send
them out into this world, where
the/re read by Jaffe.
Jaffe becomes obsessed with this
alternate world and is determined
to find it so he can gain the Art.
The Art would allow Jaffe to cross
between the two realities, or so he
thinks.
When he finds a mysterious me
dallion among the discarded mail,
Jaffe knows it’s the key to his
quest. When a supervisor confronts
him about his strange behavior,
Jaffe kills the man and flees, be
ginning his quest to gain the Art
and cross realities.
The things Jaffe discovers are
mindbending. The Sea of Quiddity
is a dream-sea which you visit
three times in your life: the night
after you’re bom, the first night
With his fourth novel
“The Great and Secret
Show,” Barker drop-
kicks horror literature
into the 1990s. It’s a

fiction genre — no

here.
you lie beside the one you love, and
the night you die.
Across Quiddity are the lad Uro-
boros, a race of creatures waiting
for a break between our reality and
Quiddity.
In his search for Quiddity, Jaffe
is opposed by Richard Fletcher, a
scientist originally hired by Jaffe
for his help. The battle between
Jaffe and Fletcher crosses the
United States and realities. A large
cast of characters take sides within
the battle.
In black and white, this plot
sounds absolutely ridiculous, but
Barker makes it work. Despite the
large canvas he uses, he never
takes a false step. His narrative
drive moves the story along while
dealing with both mundane and
cosmic settings.
‘The Great and Secret Show," is
a stunningly original novel. It’s a
rare commodity in today’s crowded
horror fiction genre — no vampires
and mummies here. Barker’s lit
erary inventions keep the 9tory
twisting and turning.
But to label Barker’s writing as
horror is wrong. “Weaveworld,”
Barker’s second novel, proved he
was a major contender in the field
of fantastical literature with gen
erous portions of gore and sus
pense mixed in.
‘The Great And Secret Show," is
the ultimate showcase of Clive
Barker’s writing abilities.
