Mid-season report
Lady Netters are on winning streak
By RANDY WALKER
Sports Writer
At the end of the women’s
tennis team’s 1989 season, the
Lady Netters won their last 14
matches en route to winning the
SEC championship and reaching
the semifinals of the NCAA Team
Championships.
This year, Georgia coach Jeff
Wallace is hoping for much of the
same.
His fifth-ranked Lady Netters
(14-2) completed a four-match
sweep over the spring vacation as
they gain momentum to defend
their SEC title.
“Last year when we won 14
matches before the conference
tournament, we went on the play
gTeat at the SECs and at Na
tionals ,” Wallace said. “We were
peaking at the right time. Hope
fully this year we can do the same
as the most important part of the
season is right in front of us.”
Georgia blitzed through LSU
8-1, No. 21 Utah 9-0, SMU 9-0,
and No. 14 BYU 8-1, all on the
road over the break to up their
winning streak to six.
“We’re in a great position right
now (for SEC’s and NCAA’s),”
Georgia’s top netter Shannan
McCarthy said. “We haven’t
reached our peak quite yet, but
we’re beating the teams that we
should be beating. We’re starting
to build a lot of confidence. Hope
fully we can peak at the right
time.”
Wallace had to deal with the
limited services of senior Jill
Waldman, whose heel ir\jury kept
her sidelined from singles play.
Sophomore Tonya Bogdonas and
Freshman Maria Salsgard both
icked up the slack created by
"aldman’s absence with decisive
victories at Nos. 5 and 6 singles.
‘They both played great,” Wal-
pi<
W;
lace said. ‘They won all their
matches very decisively. They’ve
improved their games in the past
few weeks and are playing with a
lot of confidence.”
NET NOTES
Lady Netters drop to No. 5
After being ranked No. 4 for the
entire season to date, Georgia
dropped to No. 5 in the latest
Volvo Tennis Rankings released
yesterday. Stanford stayed atop
the team rankings followed by
UCLA, Florida, and USC.
McCarthy leads Georgia pack
In the latest Volvo Tennis rank
ings, Georgia’s No. 1 singles
player Shannan McCarthy
maintained her No. 3 ranking.
Stanford’s Sandra Birch, the
1989 NCAA singles champion, re
mained in the top slot in front of
teammate Meredith McGrath.

Landers finds good in team
despite defeat by Arkansas
By CHRIS LANCETTE
Sports Writer
Reflecting on a season that
ended with a stunning upset by the
Arkansas Lady Razorbacks in the
second round of the NCAA
women’s basketball tournament,
Georgia coach Andy Landers natu
rally is thinking about what went
right for the Lady Dogs (26-4) in
the 1990 campaign — and there
was a lot of it.
Asked to talk about the big win
against then-defending national
champion Tennessee in the Col
iseum in January, or Louisiana
State in February, Landers defers
hoop talk and assumes the aca
demic lectern.
“One of the brightest moments is
that seven of our (13) kids earned
3.0s or better for the quarter,”
Landers said. ‘That’s why they’re
here. It’s a great credit to them.
They had every excuse not to do
well.”

Another mqjor point of team in*
troapection is that, after an ‘89
campaign filled with players trying
to mature on and ofT the court and
suffering: from a generally poor
team attitude, Landers said the ‘90
team has grown up.
‘In a large part, we have a lot of
the same kids from a year ago and
that was the most difficult year
that I’ve ever had as a coach,”
Landers said. “It wasn’t any fun.
This year, we’ve had fun.
“Overall, the players have ma
tured as people and players. I’ve
enjoyed coaching this group.”
But then returns the nagging
question of the surprising Ar-

kansas loss. Landers said the Lady
Dogs may have taken the Lady Ra
zorbacks too lightly.
“We may have taken them for
granted."
What’s the biggest area of the
game Georgia must work on to
make next year’s run at the Final
Four? Defense.
Asked to grade the team’s de
fensive effort throughout the
course of the season, Landers gave
them an “F”.
“We've got to change our de
fensive attitude,” Landers said.
“We’ve got to enjoy playing it. And
in order to enjoy it, we have to take
more pride in it.”
REPORT CARD
SHOOTING: B
The Lady DogB shot about 50 percent from the field throughout the
course of the senson. Stacey Fora ranked as one the nation’s top three in
the cntegory. The team averaged some 81 points per game.
REBOUNDING: A
Ford and Tamrnye Jenkins should be cnlled the “Windex Sisters " Hnrd-
mon’s leaping ability mnde her the team’s third leading rebounder. The
Lady Dogs dominated the glass all season.
DEFENSE: D
Landers gives the team on F but any team that percnially is u Top 10
power can’t piny that poorly. But in the loss to Tennessee in the SEC
and Arkansas in the NCAA, the Lady Dogs’ trapping defense were
broken and they rencted slowly throughout both games.
HUSTLE: A
Baldwin was omnipresent and tossed her body around with seeming
wreckless nbonden. She took the stitches to prove it. Shuler played nl-
most sneakily — making steals when no one seemed to expect it.
MENTALITY: C
When it mattered most, Georgia suffered. In the SEC against the Lady
Vols, the Lady Dogs were completely out of it. Against Arkansas,
Georgin appeared so confident that time ran out before it realized it was
time to play ball.
OVERALL: B
Most certainly, a Top 10 finish for any team would warrant nn A. But
because of the high standard of excellence Lady Dog funs have become
accustomed to, this team merits a 3.0.
