54th Masters: Norman faces
Gamez and friend Nicklaus
The Associated Press
AUGUSTA — Greg Norman
faces an old friend and a new nem
esis — Jack Nicklaus and Robert
Gamez —in his quest for the elu
sive green jacket this week in the
54th Masters.
“Jack is Jack,” Norman said
Wednesday of Nicklaus, who last
week won his first start on the Se
nior PGA Tour. "His confidence is
high and on the rise.
“He’s hitting the ball extremely
well; hitting it high and long. He
has a new driver, a new putter.
He’s lost some weight. He’s strong
and fit. He looks and acts like he’s
35 instead of 50. He has that pride.
He thinks he can win.”
So does Gamez, the 21-year-old
rookie who has won two times on
the PGA Tour this year The
second came at the expense of
Norman, when he holed a 176-yard
shot for an eagle-two on the final
hole at Bay Hill in Orlando.
Gamez, not awed after his first
trip over the Augusta National
Golf Club course, said he viewed
the Masters “as another tourna
ment,” and was “confident enough
I can win the championship on
Sunday.”
Norman wasn’t so sure.
“Gamez obviously is a very com
petent individual, but he hasn’t felt
it before,” Norman said. “He hasn’t
felt the Amen Corner or some
body’s bad breath down the back of
his neck. The more you play here,
the more it drains you.”
Norman should know.
Only a last-hole bogey kept him
out of playoffs in two the last four
years. Only Larry Mize’s playoff
pitch-in deprived him of a Masters
title in 1987.
Those near-misses, his obvious
affinity for the course and the tour
nament, and a strong start to the
season make him the obvious
choice as the most likely to succeed
in the 85-man field set to open play
Thursday.
With Norman between the
brackets of Gamez and Nicklaus is
a cadre of international players
who have used Augusta National
as a proving ground.

Half of the last 10 Masters have
been won by Europeans, who like
to boast that leadership in the
game has moved across the At
lantic.
Seve Ballesteros has been a
Masters champion twice and a con
tender on an almost annual basis.
He is now the European leader and
obviously is playing extremely
well.
Ballesteros said he felt very con
fident.
“When you’ve won a tournament
twice you feel more comfortable,”
he said.
Among other European stars
competing are defending champion
Nick Faldo of England, former
Masters champions Bernhard
Langer of West Germany and
Sandy Lyle of Scotland, along with
Ian Woosnam of Wales.
The U.S. counters with two-time
U.S. Open winner Curtis Strange,
current British Open title-holder
Mark Calcavecchia, Tom Kite and
Paul Azinger.
Although he hasn’t won this
season, the aggressive Calcavec
chia may be playing the best of all.
He has been a runner-up four
times already this season, in
cluding three in a row before he
took a break before the Masters.
He also has more than $551,000 in
earnings at this early point of the
season.

Netters to play Gamecocks
Toughest
match yet
By RANDY WALKER
Sports Writer
The third-ranked Georgia
men’s tennis team (13-1) travels
to Columbia S.C. today to face
No. 17 South Carolina (14-5) in
one of the Dogs’ toughest road
tests of the season.
“South Carolina is playing
with a lot of confidence right
now,” Georgia coach Manuel Diaz
said. ‘They can present problems
for any team. They have a lot of
talent all the way down to No. 6
and have very strong doubles.”
A significant force in singles
and doubles for the Gamecocks is
Stephane Simian. The 6-foot 3,
180-pound French native earned
All-American honors in singles
and doubles in 1989 with his
condor-like wingspan which per
fectly complements his intim
idating net-rushing attack.
“Stephane has a huge serve
and is a great serve and volley
player,” Simians’ opponent A1
Parker said. “He gets into net
faster than anybody I’ve ever
seen.
“He’s like a spider. He covers
the entire net unbelievably.”
In last year’s 5-4 team loss to
South Carolina in Athens, Parker
bested Simian in straight sets,
but the nation’s No. 4 ranked
player realizes he will have to du
plicate his pinpoint passing shots
to neutralize Simian’s aggres
siveness.
“When 1 played him before I
passed really well,” Parker said.
‘That’s going to be the key. I have
to pass him when he’s on top of
the net.”
The Gamecocks under coach
Kent DeMars, the 1989 NCAA
Coach of the Year, reached the
semi-finals of the NCAA tourna
ment and finished the year
ranked No. 4. After finishing a
disappointing 13th at the US-
TA/rrCA National Team Indoor
Championships, the Gamecocks
redeemed themselves defeating
No. 2 Cal-Berkeley and No. 16 A1
abama en route to reaching the
finals of the Blue-Gray National
Team Classic last weekend.
Georgia returns home Sat
urday to take on Furman at 2
p.m. at Henry Feild Stadium.
The April 9 home match with Ari
zona was canceled due to 9ched
uling conflicts.
Leave Murhy alone says manager
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) -
Atlanta Braves manager Russ
Nixon gets his dander up whenever
he hears the so-called baseball ex
perts say that Dale Murphy is
through.
“Everybody’s jumping on his
case, that he’s finished. Well, that’s
just a bunch of bull,” said Nixon.
“He’s only 34, has always taken
care of himself and is always in
shape. I think the last couple of
years, Murph has just tried to do
too much. He feels like if he doesn’t
do it, he’s letting the team down.”
Murphy, a two-time National
League Most Valuable Player, has
had two sub-par years in a row and
the club has finished last in the NL
West both seasons. He hit .228 last
year with 20 home runs and 84
runs batted in after batting only
.226 with 24 homers and 77 RBI in
1988.
Nixon is confident, however,
that Murphy — who hit 308 home
runs during the 1980s, second only
to Mike Schmidt’s 313 — will re
gain his old form with the addition
of some help in the middle of the
batting order.
The Braves signed free agent
Nick Esasky, who hit 30 home runs
last season for the Boston Red Sox,
and traded for power-hitting third
baseman Jim Presley and catcher
Ernie Whitt.
‘That’s why I feel so good about
Murphy having a good year,” said
Nixon.
Meanwhile, Murphy worked
harder than ever this spring. He
was often the last one to leave the
clubhouse after doing extra run
ning, hitting and lifting weights.
He also visited the National In
stitute of Fitness in Indianapolis
during the winter to have a
training program designed for him
He lost about 10 pounds from his 6-
foot-4 frame and hopes to at least
retain or maybe regain some quick
ness at 218 pounds.
“All I did was get in shape,”
Murphy said in an interview at the
Braves’ training complex.
