‘You Can’t Take It With
By NICOLE GUSTIN

In theater, the audience imag
ines itself onstage. And the actors
imagine themselves in the audi
ence.
This is the strategy suggested by
a cast member of Town & Gown
Theatre’s current production, “You
Can’t Take It With You," a play
written by Moss Hart and George
S. Kaufman.
It’s the last of five weeks of re
hearsals, and director Terri
Bickley is reading her notes to the
cast, who lounge on the stage, set
lor rehearsal.
The play, which opens Friday at
the Town & Gown theatre, depicts
the eccentric Vanderhof family
living in New York City in the
1930s. The only family member
who has contact with the outside
world is Alice, the conventional
daughter (played by Laurie
Powell). Alice is engaged to Tony
Kirby (played by Scott Morrison),
the son of a wealthy banker, and
she invites her future in-laws to
dinner. Alice’s hopes of making her
family appear normal are foiled
when the Kirbys arrive on the
wrong night.
The play is a comedy, illus
trating the hilarious differences
between the two families, but also
portraying the tension that can
take place when introducing in
laws.
‘The play is fast-paced," said
Marie Hutchins, who plays Alice’s
sister, Essie. “There are a variety
of characters, and there’s always
something going on."
This is Bickley’s first attempt at
directing, although she’s acted in
several of Town & Gown’s produc

You’: A fast-paced play
tions, including "A Streetcar
Named Desire," ‘The Little Foxes”
and “Come Back to the Five and
Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean.”
Her critique gives way to a pep
talk, and she tells the actors, “I
know you can’t manufacture en
ergy, but I feel like that’s where
professionalism comes in,” she
said. “You rise above being tired,
you rise above being bored, and you
just do it. That’s the kind of perfor
mance done by Town & Gown. You
are capable of that kind of perfor
mance every night.”
For five weeks, the 19-member
cast, including several University
students, have juggled school or
jobs or both with Sunday through
Thursday rehearsals.
“It takes a lot of time,” said
David Durling, who plays Mr.
Kirby, “but I don’t find it really
stressful. Some nights it takes a lot
of energy. I work eight to five. If I
have time, I get something to eat.
Then I come teVehearsal. Then I go
home and go to sleep. It’s like
having a part*time job."
University student Eugene
Howard has the role of Mr. De-
Pinna, an eccentric who adopted
the Vanderhof family eight years
ago. Howard spends most of his
time between rehearsals studying
and his weekends working part
time.
“If I could do this and get paid
for it, I’d do it,” he said. “I would
give up my job and just do this.
And hopefully one day I will be
able to*

who is famous for her many am
azing accomplishments.
The play is being performed by
The Atnens Creative Theatre and
stars Katie Grant as Annie Sul

Keller.
Grant has a great deal of respect
for Sullivan’s perseverance in
trying to reach Keller.

“I’m basically a musical comedy
person, so this is definitely a big
change from what I’m used to,” she
said. “It’s tough — it’s hard to
imagine someone doing so much,
it’s impossible to fathom someone
accomplishing so much.”
The role of Annie Sullivan is far
from musical comedy; she is more
likely to scream than sing in her
confrontations with Keller.
Gary Thacker, a senior Italian
and marketing mqjor, plays He
len’s father. He says that this pro
duction is unlike others he has
been in.
“One thing I really like about
this production and this theater in
general is that it allows the actors
and actresses to develop their
roles. The end result is that you
feel the character, you become the
character and you’ve made the
character,” Thacker said.
Director Charlie Kidd said that
this production is a challenge for
himself as well as for the cast.
“It’s been a different kind of di
recting experience. I’ve been doing
community theater, which is all
adults, and this is a younger cast,”
he said.
‘The Miracle Worker” premieres
Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the
