Fun for all at the Athens Arts Fest
By DEV JARRETT
Contributing Writer
If you’ve got anything planned
on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.,
cancel it. Instead, become a patron
of the arts at the 16th Annual
Athens Arts Festival at Memorial
Park and er\joy such visual and
musical artists as Mary Padgelek,
Bulletproof and The Shagtime
Band.
Sponsored bv the Athens Recre
ation and Parks Department and
Pepsi-Cola, among other local or
ganizations, the Arts Festival will
show artwork by local and area art
ists working in areas of visual and
musical art. Painting, pottery, jew
elry, metal smithing and stained
glass art will be represented, to
name a few.
In addition, there’s a Children’s
Arts Festival, which is sponsored
by the Heyward Allen Motor Com
pany, where the children can have
hands-on experience in many areas
of the arts. Kids will be able to join
in to create a giant string art de
sign in the trees with the help of
Bill Alexander, “face artists” will
be available to paint designs on
kids’ faces, the Athens Junior
Women’s Club will show kids how
to make interesting thumbprint
designs on paper, kids can design
and make crazy hats with paper,
crayons, and a variety of other
materials and the high point will
be chalk art — where colored chalk
will be provided for kids to com
pletely redesign the sidewalk.
Performances for the kids will
include “Hansel and Gretel” by the
Athens Creative Theatre Touring
Group, the Bumey-Harris/Lyons
Band, and the Georgia State Dance
Baton Twirling champions.
For the adults, over thirty visual
artists will have work on display,
and some will not only be selling
their art, but also demonstrating
how they work.
Mary Padgelek, master of a
painting series called “Paper
Quilts,” said that she is currently
working on another painting ex
pressly for the show. This is Ms.
Padgelek’s eighth year working
with the festival, and her “Paper
Quilts” series was recently shown
in the Tate Center Art Gallery.
The adults will also enjoy bands
and clogging groups performing
from 1 to 6:30, a collection of dixie
land, rhythm & blues, beach music
and a pinch of ballet.
Don Oliver, Recreation Super-
Kids will be able to join
in to create a giant
string art design in the
trees
visor with Athens Parks and Rec
reation Department, said that the
limited parking at Memorial Park
will not be a problem.
‘There will be a shuttle bus from
the UGA coliseum every 10 min
utes, so patrons are encouraged to
park there,” stated Oliver. He also
reported that the Athens Arts Fes
tival coincides with the reopening
of the Memorial Park Lake Area,
which had been closed for renova
tion.
Everyone is encouraged to come
for the festivities. Bring a couple of
dollars for hotdogs and other mun-
chies. Don’t worry about the cost of
the horse and wagon rides though,
because they’re free. Just be ready
to stand in line.
In the event of rain, the Festival
will be postponed until May 6th, so
hope for sunshine.

There will be lots of art for sale by artists at the Athens Arts
Festival this Sunday
