Jim Childs: Has a 3.98 grade point average in Accounting
CHILDS
From page 1
T J. Middleton won the SEC lnd<x>r
title and received a bid into the
NCAA doubles tournament.
So far in the 1990 campaign,
Childs has struggled with an
overall singles record of 18-16 (10-
12 in dual matches) and a doubles
record with Hector Nevares of 11-
11 <6-8 in dual matches). But de
spite not winning as much as in the
past three years, Childs still re
flects a positive attitude.
“At times when Jim has
struggled, he has still maintained
a positive attitude,” Georgia coach
Manuel Diaz said. “When things
haven’t gone for Jim, he hasn’t pro
jected a worried, or negative atti
tude. He stays positive and keeps
everyone positive. He provides
inspiration to the guys and puts
things in perspective for the
younger players.”
One perspective on which Childs
philosophizes greatly is that the
team always comes first.
"I came to college realizing that I
wasn’t gonna burn up the woods on
the pro-circuit,” Childs said. “I feel
like the three years I’ve been here,
I’ve played my position the best I
Peter Frey/The Red and Black
can. I don’t care where I play (in
the line-up). I came to Georgia to
tally for the team. My SEC indi
vidual titles don’t mean anything
compared to the SEC team titles
and the NCAA team title.”
Childs, a former No. 1 ranked ju
nior in Georgia, turned down a
scholarship from Stanford to play
for the school he had always
cheered for. With a resume like
Childs’, one would have to agree
with him on creating opportuni
ties. With a 3.98 GPA in Ac
counting, the 1989 Academic All-
American is currently a nominee
for the SEC and NCAA post-grad
uate scholarship awards.
Lady Netters win them one-by-one

Like any coach, in any sport,
playing one match at a time is a
philosophy, and one doesn’t worry
about matches in the future until
one gets there.
Georgia women’s tennis coach
Jeff Wallace is no different.
As coach of the top-seeded team
in the SEC Tournament this
weekend in Starkville, Miss., Wal
lace will not worry about the
awaited and almost inevitable re
match between No. 4 Georgia (20-
2, 9-0) and No. 2 Florida (26-2, 8-1)
until it happens.
“Hypothetically, it could and
should happen, but let’s get there
first,” said Wallace, whose team
will play the winner of the Missis
sippi State—Auburn match on
Friday. “It’s hard talking about it
because we’re not there yet.”
Both the Lady Dogs and the
Lady Gators, far and away the best
two teams in the SEC, have beaten
every other team in the conference
in singles. On Feb. 16, at the
Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Center in
Athens, Wallace’s Lady Dogs
nicked the Lady Gators 5-4,
handing Florida coach Andv
Brandi his first SEC dual-match
loss in 45 matches.
‘"Beating Florida is probably the
the biggest win in our program’s
history,” Wallace said.
The dual-match win for the Lady
Netters was also very significant
because of the new SEC tourna
ment format this season. For every
regular season victory, the winning
team is awarded a point to be
tacked on to the points accumu
lated for team tournament victo
ries. Georgia earned nine points by
going undefeated in the SEC
round-robin, while the Gators
earned eight points going 8-1. For
Georgia to win a share of the title,
it must reach the finals of the team
tournament. To win it outright, it
must beat its likely opponent,
Florida, in the finals.
In lost year’s individuully-
flighted tournament, Georgia
nipped Florida 29 points to 25 to
snap Brandi’s five-year grip on the
SEC team trophy.
‘There’s a good possiblitv to re
peat,” Wallace said. “If we do make
it to the finals and play Florida it’s
going to be a huge match. Everyone
of our players has to play well to
win. If three or four players play
well, we're not going to beat them.
We need every player to play well.”
The result of the probable
Georgia and Florida match-up
could determine the No. 2 seeding
at the NCAA Tournament May 9
13 on the Gators’ home courts in
Gainesville, Fla.

Dick Copas is not one accus
tomed to losing, so it’s easy to un
derstand why the men’s golf coach
has grown weary of the bridesmaid
role his golf team has been playing
this spring.
The Commerce, Ga., native has
captured seven SEC Coach-of-the-
Year titles to go along with seven
SEC titles in his 20 years as golf
coach here. Fourteen NCAA tour
nament berths also have come
along during Copas’ tenure, in
cluding a second-place finish in
1978.
Although this year’s squad
ranks 12th in the latest collegiate
golf poll, Copas feels it could be
better.
“We’ve been so close to winning
all year,” said Copas of the Golf
Dogs’ five finishes between third
and fifth place. “It would be real
nice to get over the hump we’ve
gotten ourselves behind.”
The Golf Dogs will get that op
portunity this weekend as they
travel to Auburn to participate in
the Billy Hitchcock Invitational.
Copas only hopes he doesn’t see a
repeat performance of last week
end’s fifth-place finish in the Eagle
Invitation! at Georgia Southern.
‘We should’ve won the Eagle In
vitational last weekend,” said
Copas. “We just didn’t perform well
as a team.”
Despite his disappointment,
Copas is still looking forward to the
NCAA tournament this year.
“I feel like we’re in pretty good
shape for a NCAA berth,” said
Copas, a member of this district’s
selection committee. ‘We’ve played
well all year, it’s just that our con
sistency hasn’t been what it
should.”
And it is inconsistency that has
left the Dogs with four players
three-tenths of a stroke apart for
the No. 1 spot, said Copas.
Paul Claxton, Franklin Lan
gham, Neal Hendee and Bill
Brown range from 72.9 to 73.2, re
spectively, in scoring average.
Claxton had a hot fall, winning
first outright in the Tennessee In
vitational and tying for first in the
SIC Fall Classic. But the junior
from Vidalia has tapered off con
siderably in the interim, finishing
only ns high as sixth in South
eastern Invitational this March.
However, the other three are
making strides this spring.
Hendee’s highest finish was
third in the Furman Invitational
on April 1, while Langham had his
best finish (6th) this past weekend
at the Eagle Invitational. Brown
placed third in the Southeastern
Invitational March 25.
