Hetch Hetchy album
is ‘stunningly’ good

She was in a band called Cow-
face and says she writes songs with
“blow-off-some-steam silliness.” He
listens to Strauss and plays exqui
site guitar. Together they create a
type of music they call “gothic folk
rock.”
Jay Totty and Linda Limner are
two unlikely bandmates in a
unique, young, Chicago-based
band called Hetch Hetchy, which
just released its second album on
Texas Hotel Records, entitled
“Swollen.”
The rest of the band is made up
of what Totty terms “the Hetch
Hetchy troubadors” — a revolving
collection of talented musicians
with impressive amounts of experi
ence in other bands. The current
troubadors include Michael
Wegner — guitar, bass, keyboards,
and clarinet; Mamie Fike — bass,
keyboards, backing vocals and vi
olin; Paul Trudeau — drums and
bass and John Peterson — backing
vocals and keyboards.
‘The founding principle behind
what we do in this band is the idea
of constant guest appearances. We
figure out what we want to do and
then go out and find people to
make it work out,” Totty said.
Limner said new members of the
band have augmented Hetch
Hetchy’s original sound. She said
Jay “had a guitar sound like no one
else’s because he would sit alone in
a darkened room and teach himself
how to play.”

“We rely on the unique qualities
of the people who play with us. We
don’t just indescriminately change
members like typical bands,”
Limner said.
Totty said jokingly,“We just sur
round ourselves with guest virtu
osos to make ourselves look good.”
Every member of Hetch Hetchy
plays several instruments. This
gives the band a dense and poly
phonic texture that is stunningly
showcased on the album “Swollen.”
Songs like “Retsina’ and “Heavens”
feature layers of broodingly dark
instrumentation washed over by
Limner’s breathy, angelic vocals.
Because everyone in the band
plays several instruments, Totty
said Hetch Hetchy has more
freedom in creating songs. He also
said it’s important no one in the
band be locked into playing one in
strument. That could stifle musical
inspiration.
Hetch Hetchy’s brand of “four
teenth century rock” is ethereal,
imaginative and charming. The
band, currently on tour, is defi
nitely one to see the next time it
rolls into a city near you.
New Little Feat album lacks ‘classic’ sound
ALBUM REVIEW
By RICHARD BELCHER
Contributing Writer
Have you been to a ballroom
dance lately? If so, it’s possible
you may have heard tracks from
Little Feat’s “Representing the
Mambo.”
Yes, I know, that’s a cruel
thing to say about such a great
band. Great band? Maybe. Great
album? Well...
The Feat give us 11 new songs
to enjoy. But of the 11, only four
or five have the classic Little Feat
groove. ‘Texas Twister” is the
most upbeat song on the album,
and is getting some airplay on
AOR (album oriented radio.) It
has the polished Texas boogie
sound that LF mastered over the
years.
‘Those Feat’ll Steer ya Wrong
Sometimes” and “Woman In
Love” both are excellent songs,
with plenty of piano and slide
guitar to carry you away from the
usual humdrum music of today.
‘That’s Her, She’s Mine” car
ries the torch for the traditional
LF sound. It’s heavy on superb
piano playing by Bill Payne and
untamed slide guitar of Paul Bar-
rere.
You'll find yourself cranking
up the volume and singing along
Little Feat: will play songs
with the female-backed chorus (a
trademark of older LF songs).
The next track, “Feelin’s All
Gone,” does just what the title
implies. It loses that classic LF
sound. It’s more of an easy lis
tening song —a sleeper. This is
part of the album’s problem. Most
of the songs are like boring solo
projects by separate members of
the band. The album has no di
rection.
There are two jazz flavored
tunes complete with trumpet and
saxaphone. They’re not bad
songs, they just don’t fit in with
the classic LF repetoire.
The rest of the album lacks
that good ol’ punch that LF
on Legion Field on May 9
usually delivers. Songs such as
‘Teenage Warrior” and “Daily
Grind” are too pop sounding to
blend in with the other music.
“Representing the Mambo," the
title track, sums up most of the
album. A mambo is a ballroom
dance or song. “Representing the
Mambo” seems like a compilation
of mambos, Texas mambos
maybe.
Little Feat is still a very fine
group of musicians. The music
they play, they play very well.
The only problem with this
album is that it lacks musical di
rection. The different styles of
music may frustrate the listener
who wonts to hear the traditional
LF boogie.
If you’re a Little Feat fan, the
album is worth listening to. The
LF traits are still incorporated —
many insruments create a full
sound and lyrics about Texas,
women and travelIp* (definite LF
trademarks).
If you like Little Feat, but don’t
have any of their albums, you’ll
probably be happier listening to
older material by this excellent
band, especially live. This will be
possible when they come to
Athens to Legion Field on May 9,
where they are sure to play some
of their favorite oldies. A.R.S.
opens and tickets are $6 at the
Tate Center Cashier’s Window.
