Good stories about good people
A salute to unsung heroes of UGA gymnastics
One of the misfortunea of covering the
Georgia gymnastics beat over the last two sea
sons for a paper with limited space is that a lot
of good stones went unreported — good stories
about good people.
Some of those people play more visible roles
in the overwhelming success of the team,
while the contributions of others aren’t seen
as clearly.
The following is a mini review of four sto
ries 1 would like to have done for The Red and
Black during the past two years — stories
about assistant coach and all-around great
guy Doug McAvinn, trainer Jane “111 repair
gymnasts all night long if I have to" Becker,
stafT assistant Joyce Waller and sports infor
mation representative Jeff Hundley.
McAvinn is known in gymnastics circles as
a vaulting technician. His expertise and suc
cess in raising the Lady Dogs’ vaulting scores
are well known. Before his arrival, the team’s
highest score on the apparatus was a 46.40.
Five years later, the team averages around a
47.80.
She works hard to ensure
everyone else is as
enthusiastic about their jobs
as she is about hers.
But what 111 remember most about him
when I’m gone aren’t his skills in the gym, but
his in-depth knowledge of absolutely every
thing On long bus rides we would talk about
everything from world religion to the
ecosystem. And he’s equally well-versed in
what’s wrong with the Falcons and the rest of
Atlanta’s professional losers.
He even writes text books designed to aid
Chris
Lancette
and inspire children’s abilities in mathematics
and reading. They’re excellent books; I’ve been
fortunate enough to have read a few.
The one word that is most often mentioned
about Becker, a graduate student from New
York, is “unselfish." Coaches say she’s a sa
vior; gymnasts say she’s a good friend and a
great trainer.
“I don’t even know where to start,” said
sophomore Julie Ponstein. "Without her, we
wouldn’t make nationals. She’s great at
working with our minds and our bodies. She
has gone that extra mile for everybody on the
team so many times."
Ponstein, citing just one example of
Becker’s dedication, remembers earlier this
season when Becker arrived back in town late
on a Sunday night and learned Ponstein had
sprained her ankle.
Becker went to see her immediately — not
waiting until team practice half a day later.
Such is a day in the life of Jane Becker.
Many of the stories surrounding Georgia
gymnastics are found outside the gym.
Joyce Waller, Yoculan’s persona) assis
tant, is considered an extension of Yoculan
herself.
“She’s Suzanne’s right arm, and does a lot of
the work Suzanne can’t get to," McAvinn said.
“She’s a cheerleader too, very supportive.”
Waller is supportive of the entire gymnas
tics entourage, in Oregon at the national
championships this year, she even took time
out from a party for an hour-long, heart-to-
heart chat with a worn-out college sports
writer.
She works hard to ensure everyone else is
as enthusiastic about their jobs as she is about
hers.
Gymnastics Sports Information Director
Jeff Hundley redefines the concept of being a
“gentleman and a scholar.”
As SID, his job is to work with members of
the press and provide them with the informa
tion they need — ever, if he has to trudge to his
office late at night for a vital statistic.
Hundley, who was promoted this year to ed
itor of Bulldog Magazine, a publication tar
geted for boosters, came to the University
three years ago — the same time I got involved
with gymnastics.
I can’t count the number of times he has
saved me from journalistic disaster.
On long bus rides we would
talk about from world religion
to the ecosystem.
Gracious, patient and with the integrity of
the likes of “Honest Abe” Lincoln, he’s one of
the few people I’ve met in the journalism busi
ness that I like.
In fact, if I had to choose a mentor who en
compassed professional ability and character
strength, Hundley would be my pick.
Chris Lancette, who covered the Gym Dogs
for three years as a sports writer for The Red &
Black, will concentrate on other sports now
that his beloved gymnasts have finished for the
season.

Netmen nab the No. 4
slot in Volvo rankings
By RANDY WALKER
Sports Writer
In the Volvo Tennis Collegiate
Rankings released Tuesday, the
Georgia men’s tennis team moved
up one slot into the No. 4 ranking
nationwide.
Tennessee (31-0), who bested
Georgia 5-1 in Sunday’s SEC final,
moved into the top slot.
A1 Parker, despite winning nine
of his last 12 matches, dropped
from No. 4 to No. 5 in the singles
rankings. Patricio Arnold dropped
five slots from No. 75 to No. 80.
Parker and Murphy Jensen moved
up from No. 10 to No. 6. in the dou
bles rankings.
UCLA was the No. 2 ranked
team, while Stanford, who has lost
recent matches against Cal-Ber-
keley, UCLA and USC, is ranked
No. 3.
Todd Martin of Northwestern
maintained his No. 1 singles
ranking, while Matt Lucena and
Doug Eisenmann retained the top-
ranking in doubles.
The next ranking will occur on
May 14, and will be the last before
the NCAAs, set for May 18-27 in
Indian Wells, Calif.
NET NOTES: Jack’s back!
Freshman Jack Frierson, after a
two-month leave of absence, re
turned to action at the SEC Tour
nament this weekend in Knoxville,
Tenn.
Frierson, who had left the team
for personal reasons, substituted
for Patricio Arnold in doubles
against Mississippi State in the
first round after Arnold suffered
from heat exhaustion following sin*
Jack’s back: Jack Frierson
has returned to net
gles.
Frierson and Mike Morrison
won over Max Koep and Kevin
Chase 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 doubles for
a key win in the Bulldogs’ 5-3 deci
sion over State.
Frierson also competed in a sin-
gles match in the SEC
Championship, losing at No. 6 sin
gles to Tennessee’s John Gibson.
Last glimpse: Georgia tennis
fans will get their last look at the
Georgia team this weekend before
it heads to Indian Wells, Calif, for
the NCAAs. Next, Georgia will
host the Georgia State Collegiates,
which begin Friday and run
through Sunday at Henry Feild
Stadium. All Georgia players
should see action during the Colle
giates.
Schefflin, McCarthy drop
down to No. 2 on Volvo list
By RANDY WALKER
Sports Writer
Stacey Schefflin and Shannan
McCarthy’s stint as the No. 1-
ranked doubles team was short
lived as the dynamic duo dropped
to No. 2 in the Volvo Collegiate
Tennis Rankings released
Tuesday.
Stanford University’s Meredith
McGrath and Teri Whitlinger re
placed Schefflin and McCarthy as
the top ranked team in the nation.
Since earning the No. 1 ranking
in the last poll on April 17, Schef
flin and McCarthy (17-3) have not
completed a match due to Georgia
clinching victories in singles. The
only time the duo did see action
outside of practice since becoming
No. 1 was against Florida on
Sunday. However, their match
against Cathy Goodrich and Holly
Danforth was suspended when the
Lady Gators clinched it at No. 2
doubles.
The Georgia team maintained
its No. 4 ranking, but its loss to
Florida in the finals of the SEC
Tournament was not reflected in
the rankings.
In singles, McCarthy dropped

from No. 6 to No. 7, while Schefflin
remained at No. 9. Caryn Moss
dropped four places to No. 18,
while Jill Waldman dropped three
places to No. 33. Shawn McCarthy
is ranked No. 94.
This week, Coach Jeff Wallace
will be preparing his Lady Netters
team for the NCAA
Championships, set for May 9-13
in Gainesville, Fla.
NET NOTES: What else is new?
Stanford’s women’s team kept its
No. 1 ranking in the Volvo Rank
ings Tuesday. The four-time NCAA
team champion has been the No. 1-
ranked team in the country for the
past two years. Stanford also has
the top two singles players, with
Meredith McGrath at No. 1 and
Sandra Birch at No. 2.
Tough senior Stacey Schefflin
currently leads the Georgia team
with a 33-5 singles record.
