Sesame Street creator Henson dead at 53
1936-1990
Jim Henson, famous for cre
ating the Muppets, stars of
Sesame Street, the Muppet
Show, and numerous motion pic
tures, is dead. The 53-year-old
Henson entered New York Hos
pital in Manhattan Tuesday af
ternoon and succumbed to a
massive bacterial infection early
Wednesday morning.
Henson created the Muppets, a
zany group of hand and rod pup
pets, in 1954. The Muppets
gained immense popularity on
the children’s public television
show Sesame Street, which de
buted in 1969. Backed by Hen
son’s voice, Kermit the Frog
emerged as the show’s main char
acter and became a household
name. Sa*i the Muppets grew
into a multi-million dollar com
pany which was recently pur
chased by the Walt Disney
Company.
Henson is survived by his wife
and five children. The family
plans to announce a memorial
service later.

Nature Conservancy concert
Downstairs to stage benefit
September Faces do ‘Spring Fling’
By COLEEN BROOKS

An exciting, high-energy concert
will be held tonight under the stars
on Legion Field, and best of all —
it’s free.
The show, sponsored by the Res
idential Housing Association, kicks
off Hill Community’s “Spring Fling
’90,” three days of festivities and
special events including a pool
party and outdoor movies. Mark
Douglas, the concert organizer,
was also in charge of the commu
nity’s recent benefit bash for the
Athens Area Homeless Shelter,
AIDS Athens and Project Safe.
‘The benefit went so well we fig
ured we’d be able to pull this one
off and give everybody a really
good time,” Douglas said.
September Faces, a local hard-
driving, progressive rock band, is
headlining the show. The band
consists of Spencer Cobb on lead
vocals, Todd Gelaton on drums,
Jim Nalty on guitar and Tony
Salva on bass.
“We’ve just come back from
playing on the beach in Jackson
ville and that was great. We’re
ready for another show outside,”
Cobb said.
September Faces has come a
long way in a very short while. In
less than a year the band has gone
from virtual anonymity to sharing
bills with popular acts like the Vio
lent Femmes and Fetchin’ Bones.
They headline regularly at clubs
around Athens and have even come
close to selling out the 40 Watt
Club many times.
“We’ve played all around the
state and elsewhere to really good
response,” Salva said.
The band’s live show is one of
the best in Athens. The Faces play
a blend of funk, psychedelia and
basic rock and roll that is upbeat
and irresistible. Douglas said lead
vocalist Cobb has a voice and a
stage presence unmatched by

will headline a free concert at Legion Field tonight
anyone else in town.
“We’re really glad they’re do
nating their time to put on a great
show," Douglas said.
The band members said they all
hope the show will be a fun and re
laxing end-of-school-year party for
everyone. The band’s manager,
Chris Erwin, said the concert is a
thank you to supportive fans as
well as a chance for anyone who
hasn’t yet seen the Faces to get a
look at one of Athens’ hottest
bands.
Tf you’ve ever had the slightest
impulse to come see us — do it
while it’s free,” Nalty said.
Four in Hand, a New York based
new-wave folk band, will open the
show. Salva said they’ve been
friends with the guys in Four in
Hand for years and that the band
is very excited about "coming down
South for the first time."
So bring a blanket and your
dancing shoes and head down to
Legion Field. This Spring Fling
kickoff concert is one campus event
that shouldn’t be missed. The free
show starts at 8 p.m.

Two local musicians will be
doing their part Thursday to pro
tect the world’s vast ecological le
gacy from harm.
Beth Hale and David Levitt, who
have co-owned the Downstairs
Cafe for almost three years with
Athens artist Jim Stacy, are
staging a show there to benefit the
Nature Conservancy, a national
and international non-profit orga
nization concerned with preserving
the natural environment.
The show will feature the Vigi
lantes of Love, a band made up of
members of the Cone Ponies, and
Cordy Lon, Hale and Levitt’s pro
gressive acoustic folk/rock group.
Levitt said the Downstairs crew
has taken an active part in bet
tering the environment in the past
by holding benefits for Greenpeace
and other causes.
He said they got involved with
the Nature Conservancy because of
the unique way it has responded to
the threat of permanent destruc
tion many species of plants and an
imals are facing today.
‘The way they get involved is by
buying the endangered land and
preserving it that way. It’s very dif
ferent from Greenpeace because
it’s not as high profile but it still

does a lot of good," Levitt said.
Since 1951, the Nature Conser
vancy has worked to intervene be
tween land developers and the
environment. They buy everything
from wetlands and swamps to arid
areas and pristine forests in order
to protect the land and its natural
community.
In the last 30 years, the Conser
vancy has played a role in pre
serving 131,813 acres of land in
Georgia alone.
T joined about a year ago be
cause I felt like in a lot of ways the
government moves too slowly and
the Nature Conservancy has found
a way to effect an immediate
change,” Hale said.
Levitt said “essentially what
they’re doing in some cases is
turning over the land to other
groups to manage,” while some of
the land becomes government wild
life preserves.
He said the Nature Conservancy
goes through a long legal process to
keep the right to regularly inspect
the lands to insure that absolutely
no development or dumping is
taking place
When they aren’t coping with
the cafe business or dealing with
environmental issues, Hale and
Levitt can be found working with
their band Cordy Lon. The com
bined sound of Levitt’s bass, vocals
and guitar, Robbie Zimmermann’s
drums and Hale’s cello is one very
uncommon in the Athens commu
nity.
“We’re a really weird minima-
listic band. We do strange covers
like “Greensleeves” and “Your
Cheatin’ Heart." We’re not a rock
and roll band — that’s for sure,"
Levitt said
Cordy Lon’s eight song album
“Misanthropic” features an intri
cate, melodic mix of articulate ly
rics, Levitt’s distinctive vocals and
the haunting, strangely unfamiliar
sound of Hale’s cello.
Levitt said,“What we want to do
with this benefit is raise aware
ness, give the Nature Conservancy
a higher profile and raise interest
in joining the Conservancy.”
Cordy Lon and the Vigilantes of
Love will perform tonight at the
Dounstairs. The $3 admission
charge will benefit the Nature Con
servancy.
