8 seniors on Diamond Dogs
pursue last chance at title
Hooks may win the long jump —
if she gets ‘hopping’ mad at SECs
By ERIC GARBER
Sports Writer
All this season, the Georgia
baseball team has been recognized
for the speedy development of its
youth. But what about the squad’s
older players?
For eight Diamond Dog seniors,
the SEC tournament, which begins
today in Hoover, Ala., marks the
last chance to be a part of an SEC
championship.
Four of the eight seniors leaving
the baseball program at the end of
this season are current starters
and four are pitchers.
Although several of these
players may get drafted in the up
coming Maj () !* League Baseball
draft, it’s unlikely any will be se
lected in the eurly rounds.
"Right now, it doesn’t look like
any of Georgia’s seniors will be
drafted in the first 10 rounds of the
(Major league) draft,” said Jim
Cnllis, assistant editor of Baseball
America.
"But after the 10th round any
thing can happen,” he said.
In addition, there’s a possibility
that as many as four Georgia ju
niors will be drained from the team
in the draft.
“It’s difficult for me to say what
it will be like if this is my last year
at Georgia,’’ junior pitcher Dave
Fleming said earlier this week.
“I really don’t know what will
happen with (the draft) so I’m just
going to do my best to help the
team now,” he said.
Baseball America recently pre
dicted that Fleming will be the first
pick from the SEC this spring.
Junior shortstop J.R. Showaiter
is expected to be picked within the
draft’s first 10 rounds.
Senior designated hitter Brian
Jester, who has a .392 batting av
erage this season, feels that
Georgia has enough talent to make
his last tournament trip exciting.
“I’ve said it before, these guys
just won’t let themselves lose,”
Jester said. “That’s why it was so
hard when we lost those three to
LSU. It makes us sick to not come
out on top.”
Jester, whose career batting av
erage at Georgia is .318, hit 13
homers his first three years with
the Dogs. Through 59 games this
season, he’s cracked 15 to lead the
team.
Other seniors traveling to the
tournament for the last time are
second baseman Joey Alfonso,
center fielder McKay Smith, third
baseman Jeff Cooper, and pitchers
Mike Rebhan, Ray Kirschner, Matt
Hoitsma and Joe Kelly.
Rebhan’s most memorable
achievement at Georgia was his
no-hitter thrown against Western
Carolina in 1989, one of only four
no-hitters in Bulldog history.
"I’m going into the rest of this
season with the same attitude I’ve
had,” Rebhan said before the team
left to play LSU last weekend.
"We’re doing the best we can out
there and I’m doing my best to
keep this team in games.”
Georgia plays Vanderbilt today
at 1 p.m. EST in the tournament’s
first round. All Georgia games will
be broadcast by radio station
WRFC, AM 760.
Even with an average tourna
ment performance, Georgia is ex
pected to land a spot in the NCAA’s
Northeast Regional in Waterbury,
Conn., or in the Southeast Re
gional in Miami, Fla.

Georgia has an outstanding
chance of winning the long jump
at this weekend’s SEC Track
Championships — if Anita Hooks
can get mad enough.
The modest, 19-year-old sopho
more is among the top four long
jumpers in the SEC. She is in
that elite crowd because she
learned something very impor
tant — that she does her best
jumping when she gets really
mad.
In high school, her coach used
to yell at her until she was fu
rious. Then she’d beat her per
sonal best.
Her coach wasn’t her only mo
tivator.
Her father would entice her
into jumping farther by telling
her she couldn’t do it.
Hooks now realizes she can no
longer rely on other people to in
still in her the desire to leap; she
has to find it in herself.
The Roanoke, Va. native is
peaking at the right time, having
recorded her personal best of 20
feet 5 inches two weeks ago at the
Drake Relays in Iowa. She will
face two tough competitors this
weekend — Dailia Duhaney from
LSU and LaKeta Ziegler from
Auburn.
Her coach, Ralf Uebel, says
that Hooks has what it takes to
not only win this weekend’s
tough competition but to qualify
for the NCAAs.
“There are three others
jumping over 20 feet but Hooks is
the closest to winning of these,”
Uebel said. “She will be jumping
20 feet 6 inches to 20 feet 8 inches
pretty soon."
Hooks’ jumping has prevailed
through an ankle injury she suf
fered in February. She has also
endured the pain of shin splints.
Neither of those aches will stop
her this weekend, she said.
“I have been taking good care
of it and I’m wearing an ankle
brace so I should do well," Hooks
said.
Hooks participated in the Spec
Towns Invitational last weekend
and placed third overall in the
Anita Hooks: Among the top
four long jumpers in SEC
long jump with 19 feet 5 inches.
Latasha Rogers from the Atlanta
Track Club placed first with a 20
feet 5 inches and Marcia Fletcher
from Clemson placed second with
a 19 feet 7 1/2 inches.
Perhaps the poor turn-out of
athletes at the Spec Towns meet
due to the fear of the measles epi
demic didn’t allow Hooks to get
really mad and take first place.
