The Rea & Black wat there to catch
thii up-and-coming band
Kevin Morrison, the guitarist of
Hollyfaith said, “Don’t ask us any
of thoee boring questions like what
are your influences and things like
that* Rob Aldridge, lead singer in
terjected, “Yeah, we’re pretty tired
of all that, it's always tne same.”
The Red & Black: Alright, when
are you going to record?
Aldridge: "We would like to as
soon as possible. But it really won't
be anytime soon. We could have
done one and paid ourselves, like
"Opium,” our first EP, but we be
lieve someone else should pay for
it. It’s like everyone thinks we're
going to record, they're always
asking us that. Of course, a lot of
rumors fly about this band. Like,
we’re the biggest drug dealers in
the South’
Morrison: "Yeah, some people
were coming up to me and telling
me our drummer was in a crash
and broke his collarbone. Even
tually he ended up dying.”
Chet Jameson, the drummer, sat
there and smiled.
Morrison continued, “People are
like, 'Congratulations on getting
signed.”
Aldridge: ‘We’re still an un
signed band.”
Morrison: “An unheard of band.”
Aldridge: Well, we don’t want to
be signed by a label, that’s our goal.
We’re trying very hard, and it’s
easy not having to deal with
things.”
Morrison: “A lot less pressure. A
lot easier.”
Aldridge: Why don’t you let
Kevin tell you about his tattoo that
he got when we went to Cali
fornia?”
Morrison: “Yeah, I like couldn't
sleep. I was having these horrible
dreams about crowned geckos. So
we were down by the Sunset Strip
tattoo parlor and I got the notion
from somewhere to get a lizard on
my forearm. I don't know, it has
some significance.”
R & B: How was California? Did
INTERVIEW
anyone know you?
'dridge: "No. f
of us. Geffen flew us out there. Paid
for everything. We were in the
same studio as the Beastie Boys.”
David Franklin, the bassist, and
Jameson sat there most of the time
just listening.
R A B: How would you classify
yourself?
Morrieon: Well, I classify it like
college radio, kind of like tne Cult
before their latest album.”
Jameson: "Love jazz.”
Franklin chimed in: "Gay, love
jazz.’
Morrison: “Gay, acid, love jazz.’
Aldridge: "Yeah, put that in
there. No, we’re a modern rock
band. We’re not alternative, alter
native ie totally different.”
R & B: What are you doing this
summer?
Aldridge: “Going to camp. I’m
going to bible school."
Morrison: “I got a paper route.
I’m bIbo a counselor at camp.’
Jameson: "Rob’s going to sing at
an Episcopalian seminary school.”
Aldridge: “Yeah, that’s right.”
R A B: What about touring?
Aldridge: ‘Touring is starting to
slack off. We’ll be playing, but con
sidering we’ve done 15 days in a
row, I think well do something like
one gig a week.”
R A B: Speaking of gigs, where is
your favorite place to play?
Morrison: “Hey, that’s original."
Aldridge: “I would say for a long
time it was the Little Five Points
Pub.”
Morrison: “I like playing the
Roxy the best.”
R A B: How did you guys meet?
Did you all go to school here?
Aldridge: “No. Chet and I went
to Georgia State. Kevin went to
FSU and David went to a junior
college. What happened was 1 was
supposed to marry Kevin’s sister,
but she tried to shoot me.”
Morrison: “He caught it with his
left eye.”
Aldridge: “Yeah, after that we
became friends.”
The band could’ve talked longer,
but it was getting late and they
had to do their second set. The
second set was intense as they
ayed ’’Invisible,” "Watching,
siting, Turning," "Stimulation”
and everything else off of “Opium."
These songs produced the
loudest cheers, especially when
they tore into “Color of Blood.” For
some reason this song seemed to
affect the crowd more than any
other as the crowd whipped into a
frenzy that continued until they
finished with “April Days.”
