The tennis was good, bad and not so ugly in California
Objective reporting is an attribute you must
have to be a journalist. That’s why I walked
through the gate of the Hyatt Grand Cham
pions resort in Indian Wells, Calif, with an
open mind as I began taking notes for my cri
tique of the NCAA tournament, outside of
Athens for the first time in 14 years.
What I discovered during the 10-day event
was that the NCAAs in Indian Wells had a
little bit of the good, a little bit of the bad, and
certainly none of the ugly.
THE GOOD: During the first day of the
tournament, Cal-Irvine’s coach Greg Patton
put a thought in my head when he said, “My
mom saw us play in the NCAAs for the first
time.”
People in California finally got a chance to
see NCAA tennis. Jason Netter’s family got to
see their favorite UCLA Bruin play perhaps
his best tournament, making the singles final.
Boosters, family and friends of other West
Coast schools got a chance to see their teams
play for the national title and got a look at the
best players from the East.
The facility at the Grand Champions resort
is ranked among the world’s best, and tourna
ment officials proved they could run the
NCAAs, as well as the professional tourna
ments they host like the Newsweek Grand
Champions Cup.
This tournament was so well-organized
and so well-run here in Indian Wells,” Stan
ford coach Dick Gould said. ‘The tournament
stafT deserves a tremendous amount of credit.”
The entire facility was plush with grass,
flowers, date and palm trees, fountains, and
truly captured the beauty of the California de
sert. While Athens exhibits the quaintness
and peacefulness of the Georgia Piedmont, In
dian Wells is paradise in every sense of the
word.
“Playing the NCAAs in Athens is like going
Randy
Walker
to the mountains for a rustic vaction," Patton
said. “Indian Wells is like going to Tahiti.”
THE BAD: Indian Wells didn’t get any
where near the crowd support that Athens ac
complished during the past 13 years.
Attendance averaged around 1,000 daily, and
the approximately 2,200 fans who came out to
watch the singles final looked miniscule and
bad for college tennis in a 10,000-seat sta
dium.
Many players, coaches and journalists, like
myself, also felt little, if any, tradition or at
mosphere of college tennis at the new venue.
'The atmosphere at Georgia is great,”
Texas coach Dave Snyder said. "You kind of
look and see the scoreboard and word gets
around and there’s a little buzz in the air
when something happens.”
I didn’t discover that Stanford freshman
Jared Palmer had upset top-seeded Todd
Martin of Northwestern on the stadium court
until near the end of the day. I heard no roar
of the crowd and felt no buzz. The only thing
that got around was the dirt flying off the de
sert when the wind picked up in the aflemoon.
The wind and sand that would roll in off the
mountains in the late aflemoon often made
play very difficult. One player said Indian
Wells was great because you didn’t need to
bring any lunch money because you ate dirt all
day.
But the most common complaint of coaches
and players remained the lack of atmosphere.
The type found at Georgia’s Henry Feild Sta
dium.
“I er\joy Athens. There was a lot of tradition
there,” Cal-Irvine’s Trevor Kronemann said.
‘They're gonna try and build some tradition
here (Indian Wells), but I don’t know if that’s
gonna work out or not. If I had my choice, I’d
go back to Athens.”
“Georgia built the tournament into prob
ably one of the greatest amateur spectator
events in the world of sports," Gould said. “It
was a thrill to be able to win in that environ
ment, as well as a tremendous challenge.”
The team tournament was held at three
sites: the Hyatt, the courts at the Stouffer’s
hotel across the street and at the LaQuinta
Club, 15 minutes down the road. The best
view at Stouffer’s was definitely through the
wind screen, or maybe on top of an adjacent
palm tree. I never went to LaQuinta because it
was too inconvenient.
THE CERTAINTLY NOT UGLY: My
mind was numbed by the indescribable sur
roundings and environment encircling the
tournament site. The San Jacinto and Santa
Rosa mountains rose above the bleachers and
banners, providing an extraordinary backdrop
for the extraordinary tennis played during the
week at the beautiful desert resort.
In retrospect, the NCAAs went well in Cali
fornia, and the Grand Champions resort de
serves more chances to host the event, but a
year-by-year rotation with Georgia would be
the fairest solution.
And that’s objectively speaking.

When Jill Kinloch putted out for
bogey last Saturday at the NCAA
championships, it was more than
her last hole of the tournament.
For the senior from Scotland, it
was her last hole as a University of
Georgia golfer.
“It was definitely a strange
feeling,” Kinloch said Tuesday, her
distinctive accent giving away her
roots.
“It was just unfortunate that I
had to bogey on my last hole,” she
said.
But having Kinloch on the team
and in the classroom was anything
but unfortunate for the University.
Kinloch proved to be a constant
for the No. 10 women’s golf, aver
aging 77.76 strokes a round before
the NCAAs. But more importantly,
she was pivotal in setting an ex
ample for her younger teammates.
“Jill is one of those players you
can count on to bring in a solid
score every day," teammate and
fellow senior Anne Cain said.
“She’s really, really disciplined and
sets a good example for the
younger players.”
Especially in the classroom.
The two-time Academic All-
American is shooting for magna
cum laude honors (3.7 GPA) when
she graduates this June. Kinloch
majors in Recreation and Leisure
Studies, which is “basically sports
management,” she said.
Kinloch arrived at Georgia in
1986 via the American Junior
Classic in Tampa, Fla. After being
sighted by former coach Liz Mur-
phey at the tournament, Kinloch
toured the campus and settled on
Georgia, instead of Furman or
Ohio State, because of the “pro
gram, the people and the facili
ties.”
As far as life beyond the Univer
sity, Kinloch, like most who play
college sports, aspires to move on
to the next level.
“It has always been a goal of
mine to turn pro,” Kinloch said.
“But I have yet to make a verbal
commitment.”
But winning on the pro tour is
not what Kinloch looks most for
ward to.
‘The thing I look most forward
to most is coming back and
cheering for the team,” Kinloch
said.
“It'll be great to come back and
see the girls who are freshman
play as seniors,” she said.
Speaking of her freshman years,
Kinloch said she had her trials and
tribulations muckh like she has on
the golf course.
“Just like in golf, I’ve had my
ups and downs here at Georgia,”
Kinloch said. “But I would never
change a thing.”
