Mo Lewis provides quick QB attack for Bulldogs
By ERIK SCHMIDT
Sports Writer
When Georgia linebacker Mo
Lewis seeks advice, he goes to a
real pro — a pro football player
that is.
Lewis attended J.C. Murphy
High School in Atlanta, where he
became acquainted with Murphy
High alumni and Chicago Bears
defensive end Richapd Dent.
“I learned a lot from Richard
Dent,” said Lewis, who will start at
linebacker against Ole Miss Sat
urday. “He showed me how to get
up off the ball quickly.”
That ability got the Bulldog se
nior moved from his high school po
sition at defensive end to his
current role at outside linbacker
here at Georgia.
‘The main thing they (the
coaching staff*) moved me for was
my speed,” Lewis said.
With Lewis running the 40-yard
dash in 4.6 seconds coming out of
high school, no one could blame
them.
Lewis did not begin his gridiron
career until his junior year in high
school. Despite his late start, the 6-
foot 4, 241 pound Atlanta native
still managed to set the state cap
ital on fire.
He received first team AA All-
State honors and was ranked as
the 34th-best prospect in Georgia
by the Atlanta Journal-Constitu
tion. He was also one of the best
baseball players in the school.
As a freshman at Georgia, Lewis
played in six games and developed
a great knack for rushing the
passer. This knack has festered
into a quarterback sacking plague
for opposing teams as Lewis tallied
11 sacks in his first three years
here — 10 of which came last
season.

“You have to have both speed
and strength (to be an effective
pass rusher),” Lewis said. “If a
lineman hooks on to you, your
speed won’t help.”
Lewis also is an exceptional
tackier for the Bulldogs. This
season he has rolled up 51 total
stops (241 career) and is coming off
one of his finest performances in
quite a while.
“Mo played his best football
game on Saturday against
Clemson,” Georgia coach Ray Goff
said. “We expect him to play the
same way every week.”
This season, the normally domi
nant Lewis has been slowed down
by opponents’ blocking schemes,
and key injuries sustained by the
Georgia defense.
“When you take six guys
Lewis has 51 tackles
already this season.
starting for you off defense, people
know who to look for," Goff said.
But Lewis said he is not worried
about the extra attention that he is
receiving from other teams.
“I feel it’s an opportunity for
other players to make big plays,"
he said. “I don’t feel any extra pres
sure except from fans’ expecta
tions.”
Lewis’ extraordinary ability has
not gone unnoticed by the rest of
the country. Coming into the 1990
season, the Georgia defender was
one of the top candidates for the
Butkus Award, an award given an
nually to the the best linebacker in
the nation.
“It’s a nice honor to receive if I’m
chosen,” Lewis said. “I’m going to
have to pick up my play in order to
receive that."
Ole Miss offensive coordinator
Red Parker is also impressed with
Lewis and his defensive repertoire.
“He’s terrific. If you run to him,
hell hand out headaches,” he said.
“If you run away, he’ll catch you
from behind.”
But Parker did seem to come up
with a flawless plan to contain
Lewis.
“We’re going to assign the worst
player we’ve got and get him to
pick a fight with Lewis,” Parker
said jokingly. ‘Then both players
will be ejected.”

Unless you really enjoy reading manuals,
get a Macintosh.
Tim Motei
Computer Science
Vanderbilt University
Macintosh practically eliminates the need to
keep manuals next to my computer, because-
regardless of which program I'm using—I can open,
close, save, and print files in exactly the same way.
.And you can't say that about any other computer.
“Today lots of other computers are attempting
to look and work like a Macintosh, but it's just not
possible.They’re tix> fundamentally different
to begin with. This may sound a little
strange, but comparing a Macintosh
to other computers is like com
paring apples to oranges. Y( m can
squash the orange into shape
and paint it to look like tut
apple, but underneath the
makeup, it's still an orange.
“It's funny-1 work at
the Vanderbilt computer
store and I’ve seen lots of
people switch from other
computers to Macintosh, but
I've never seen anybody with a
Macintosh switch to another
computer."
