1990-91 season this weekend at the Florida Invitational In Gai
nesville. All of Georgia's seven-member squad will compete ex-
cept junior All-American Shannan McCarthy.
Dogs to go low-tech versus Rebels

With the Georgia offense
nearly last in every SEC statis
tical category, coach Ray Goff
and offensive coordinator George
Heffner decided to slice the play-
book.
"We have looked at making the
playbook smaller," Goff said. "We
are going to cut back on the plays
we use and just go with what we
have been successful with."
There have been a scant few
areas offensively where Georgia
has been successful this season.
Georgia is in the SEC basement
in total offense (245 yards per
game), passing offense (110.6
yards per game), scoring offense
(14 points per game), first downs
per game (averaging 14.60),
ninth in third down conversion
(converting on only 35 percent)
and eighth in rushing offense
(134 yards per game).
Offensive coordinator George
HafTner welcomed the new offen
sive scheme.
“It doesn’t mean anything to us
except an opportunity to improve
on the fundamentals," HafTner
said. "We have to get back to the
fundamentals of running and
throwing the football.”
Goff declined to mention ex
actly what type of plays would be
axed or which ones Mississippi
will see this Saturday. However,
Goff will start Garrison Hearst at
tailback and indicated that the
offense was “going to get the ball
in the hands of the people that
could make the big play.”
According to quarterback Greg
Talley, the playbook reduction
may be the one trick that could
turn the fortunes of the Georgia
offense.
"We have had problems on of
fense as a whole and maybe we
do need to knock things down a
bit and do what we do best,"
Talley scud. “Maybe if we take
some of the complicated stuff out
of the offense, maybe our offense
will stop being so tentative.”
“Even though we may cut
down on some things, that
doesn’t mean that we won’t try
different things in a game,”
HafTner said. 'We have to concen
trate on the specifics and basics
in practice.”
Ole Miss coach Billy Brewer
said he is extremely concerned
the Georgia offense is a sleeping
giant that is finally ready to
awaken.
“I think we are going to see the
real Georgia football team this
week and that really scares me,"
Brewer said.
Perhaps, but Brewer will bring
a solid and aggressive defensive
squad to Athens. The Rebels (4-1
overall and 2-1 SEC) are allowing
164 yards per game on the
ground and 219 yards per game
in the air and are led by senior
strong safety Chris Mitchell.
Mitchell received the Chucky
Mullins Courage Award (the
award is the opportunity to wear
jersey number 38 — Mullins’ old
jersey. The former Rebel de
fensive back sustained a par
alyzing injury aganist Vanderbilt
in 1989.)

Basketball tips off Sunday
By PHILLIP RAMATI
Sports Wnter
Just when you least expected it,
it’s time for the squeak of hightops
on courts and the swish of basket
balls through nets.
"Midnight Madness," the bas
ketball team’s first practice, is
back. Beginning Sunday at mid
night, basketball fans will get to
see the newest incarnation of Head
Basketball Coach Hugh Durham’s
Dogs, the defending SEC cham
pions.
As in past years, the practice
will showcase the team’s athleti
cism and skill. As guard Litteri&l
Green put it, “There will be a lot of
dunking and athletic feats...These
guys are incredible.”
Green is a veteran of two mid
night games, but "Midnight Mad
ness” has not lost any of its luster
for him.
“In fact, it has just gotten
better,” he said.
Better not only for the players,
but for the fans as well. Among the
prizes to be given away Sunday
night include $1,000 cash, Nike
shoes and a compact disc player as
well as other surprises. In addi
tion, the fans will also act as judges
for a slam dunk contest before the
game. Domino’s Pizza and Coca-
Cola will be available to the first 1,-
500 fans.
“It used to be just another prac
tice, but over the last four or five
years it has changed to involve the
fans," Durham said. “Now it’s kind
of a tipoff for the season.”
Under league rules, teams are
not allowed to have organized prac
tice before Oct. 15.
Both Durham and his players
have stressed the importance of
fan involvement.
“We want the fans to feel like
they are part of the team," Durham
said. ‘The fans played a vital part
in our winning the SEC. They were
our sixth man. In fact, I wish the
fans could come to all of our prac
tices, because it would help the in
tensity level.”
While the scrimmage game is for
fun, don’t think the players are not
taking it seriously. The players will
do the things that they would nor
mally do in a game.
"Whenever I play I try to im
prove my game,” said Antonio
Harvey, a sophomore transfer from
Southern-Illinois.
Green has the same philosophy,
but for a slightly different reason.
“I don’t want to drive into the
lane with all of those big guys,"
Green said jokingly. “I could get
killed.”
While the play will not be as con
trolled as a normal game, no one is
too concerned about the possibility
of injury.
“It’s no more of a concern here
than in any other practice,”
Durham said.
Said Harvey, ‘The best way to
avoid injuries is to play hard.”
Just as the players get pumped
up when there is a big crowd, their
play is affected when there isn’t.
“We represent Georgia and feel
this is why the fans would want to
come out," Harvey said. “If not,
they will definitely miss out on
something fun."
Gates open at 11 p.m. and ad
mission is free. Because of the
amount of prizes and food to be
given away, fans are encouraged to
arrive early.
