“Rocky V
By NOEL MURRAY
Entertainment Writer
There’s an inherent problem
with all the “Rocky” movies. Okay
you ve got this guy, and he screws
up all of his courage and fortitude
and inner strength and whatnot...
to beat up another guy. In the
grand scheme of what is or isn’t im
portant in life, beating someone up
just seems to hang a little low on
the tree.
At any rate, “Rocky V” is now
out. As in the previous movies, a
chain of events occurs that shake
the big guy up, riddle him with
self-doubt and return him to the
underdog status that makes the
whole series so uplifting. This
time, he’s been told he has brain
damage so severe that he shouldn’t
fight anymore, and a crooked ac
countant has made off with the
lion’s share of his fortune.
Down, out and back in the Phila
delphia ghetto that spawned him,
Rocky takes on the job of training
Tommy Gunn, a young fighter he
attempts to steer away from a cor
rupt Don King-esque fight pro
moter.
” could be final bell
■ MOVIE REVIEW
Unfortunately, the money sways
young Gunn and his betrayal of
Rocky sets up a final bout that is
one of the most creatively staged of
all the “Rocky" movie fights. But
the problem here, as always, is just
what motivates this practically
brain-dead palooka to get into the
scrap in the first place.
Granted, there’s the question of
pride. In the first “Rocky” there
was the whole notion of the simple
kid getting a little something for
himself, but Rocky’s had his ride
and he’s blown it time and time
again. One would think some kind
of lesson would sink in.
It seems as if some kind of lesson
might when, during the final fight,
Rocky hits the ground and sees a
montage of all the fights he’s had
and all the times he’s been brutally
beaten. The message seems to be
clear — maybe this isn’t the best
way to make a living. But instead,
the “Gonna Fly Now” music swells
and our hero gets up and kicks the
crap out of a pretty decent kid who
is trying, like Rocky once did, to get
a little something for himself.
In addition to starring in this
movie, Sylvester Stallone wrote
this mess, and he plots with the
same leaden determination with
which he acts. In “Rocky V,” he at
tempts to put a newspin on the
character by having him talk and
behave the way a brain damaged
boxer would. Stallone, though, is
no Daniel Day Lewis and this is not
“My Left Hook.” His unique char
acterization grows tiresome (and a
little embarassing) after about five
minutes.
There is a large contingent for
whom “Rocky” is their glass of raw
eggs, and who see no problem with
the premise itself. Long-time fans
will probably like “Rocky V." It’s
true to the formula and is infinitely
better than the xenophobic “Rocky
IV.” Still, that’s certainly not
saying much.
Let’s hope Stallone takes a cue
from his subtitle for ‘"Rocky V" and
really makes this one “The Final
Bell."

“Reversal of Fortune” worth seeing
By NOEL MURRAY
Entertainment Writer
“Reversal of Fortune* could be
subtitled “Rhode Island Law,” or
‘The Drug Habits of the Rich and
Famous,” or “Claus von Bulow —
Calculating Criminal or Clueless
Cretin?” But what’s in a name? A
good movie is a good movie is a
good movie. “Reversal of For
tune" is a good movie, despite the
blah title.
It’s about the appeal of Claus
von Bulow — “appeal” meaning
both his winning personality and
his attempt to reverse a jury’s de
cision to convict him for the put
ting his wife Sonny in a coma.
Glenn Close plays Sonny, the
obscenely rich woman with a love
for aspirin and insulin. Jeremy
Irons plays Claus, the slightly
less rich man who married well
and has questionable morals.
Ron Silver plays Alan Dersho-
■ MOVIE REVIEW
witz, the hotahot attorney who
defends Claus on principle, not
because he is convinced Claus is
innocent.
The interplay of these person
alities — Sonny and Claus in
flashback, Claus and Alan in the
present — is fun to watch. Je
remy Irons plays Claus von
Bulow as a cool charmer,
muddled by all the fuss around
him. His performance is magnifi
cently comic.
“Reversal of Fortune" is not
really a comedy, but it plays off
the darker elements of the script
for comic effect. When Claus be
gins his voice-over narration
about his wife’s coma with
“Sonny loved Christmas ...” it’s so
absurd it’s funny.
Most of the film, though, would
qualify more as a courtroom
drama, with all of the intrigue at
tendant to that genre. Alan
Dershowitz’s law students help
him uncover bits of evidence to
discredit the original von Bulow
decision. The revelations come
slowly, but give the movie mo
mentum.
There is one problem with “Re
versal of Fortune” — the reenact
ments of the events surrounding
Sonny von Bulow’s two comas are
tedious and repetitive. They tend
to bog the movie down and make
the viewer restless. I saw two
couples leave, complaining of bo
redom.
Stick through these slow mo
ments though, and the reward is
great. “Reversal of Fortune” may
have trouble finding an audience
due to the boring name and lack
of publicity, but it should be seen.
At this moment, “Reversal of For
tune" is the best way to spend a
Saturday afternoon in Athens.
