Gym Dogs
may lose
top junior
This year’s Georgia gymnastics
team could lose a vital team
member if junior Sophia Royce de
cides not to attend school next
quarter.
Royce withdrew from school last
week for personal reasons.
However, it remains uncertain if
Royce will return to school winter
quarter for the gymnastics season.
Georgia coach Suzanne Yoculan
said Royce’s departure would hurt
the team for the upcoming season
because they would lose one of
their potential all-arounders.
“She is capable of scoring 9.7
and 9.8 on bars and beam which
were real high scoring events for
her,” Yoculan said. "We don’t have
a backup who can score that high
on those events.”
Yoculan said that sophomore
Lisa Alicea will probably fill in for
Royce in the all-around.
Last year, Royce scored a season
high 9.8 on the uneven bars at the
NCAA regionals and scored a
season high 9.6 on beam at the
NCAAs.

Spikers miss NCAAs
after final loss to LSU
By LYA WODRASKA
Sports Writer
The Georgia volleyball team (26-12) came close to winning an
NCAA berth this weekend at the SEC Tournament in Mobile, Ala., but
a disappointing loss to Louisiana State University in the final dashed
their hopes.
“We went down prepared to have to win the tournament to go to
the NCAA tournament, Georgia coach Jim lams said.
The Bulldogs reached the final by winning matches over Tennessee
and Mississippi by scores of 15-8, 15-11, 15-12 and 15-4, 11-15, 15-5,
15-9.
lams said his Spikers played a solid match against Tennessee after
winning the first game by overcoming a 0-8 deficit.
Freshman Franci Rard led the offense with 13 kills, while Kristin
Hackley contributed 10 kills and three aces. Lenore Davis bolstered
the defense with 17 digs.
The Bulldogs went on to defeat the Rebels in the semifinal.
“It was a pretty decent match for us,” lams said. “Mississippi is a
good team and they played well.”
Senior Christie Lord pounded the Ole Miss defense for 21 kills
while Rard contributed 12 kills and 14 digs. Davis made 13 digs and
four aces.
Georgia met LSU in the final but lost by scores of 9-15,16-14,15-8,
9-15. 15-2.
Sue Novak hammered 21 of the team’s 82 kills. Davis again led the
defense with 17 digs.
Lord was named All-SEC while Hackley, Jill Moore, and Stephanie
Dunkle were named Academic All-SEC. Lord and Davis were both
named to the All Tournament team.
Even though the loss prevented the Bulldogs from going to the
NCAA tournament, they will travel to Knoxville, Tenn., Thursday to
compete in the Women’s Invitational Volleyball Tournament.

Dupree gets nod
versus No. 2 Tech
By ERIK SCHMIDT
Sports Writer
Freshman quarterback Joe
Dupree was given the nod by
Georgia coach Ray Goff last week
to start the Bulldogs’ season finale
against second-ranked Georgia
Tech (9-0-1) on Saturday (12:30
p.m., WTBS).
“Joe had been doing some good
things and we thought he should
be rewarded,” Goff said. “We’re not
dissatisfied at all with Greg Talley.
We just felt like Greg’s been pres
sured a bit. We wanted to take
some of the pressure off.”
Dupree made his first appear
ance for the Bulldogs against Van
derbilt on Oct. 20 and performed
well as he connected with fellow
freshman Andre Hastings on a 68-
yard touchdown strike.
“I’m very excited about the
game,” Dupree said of Saturday’s
game. “I’m really nervous.”
Dupree is only six for 33 as the
Bulldog quarterback, but definitely
is the most mobile of the Georgia
quarterbacks. In his four-game
stint for Georgia, he already has
become the team’s third-leading
rusher with 236 yards.
Dupree, though, said he is not
concerned with his personal statis-

tics.
“I just want to win,” he said.
“The biggest thing is that the team
wins.”
Dupree may be in action without
the help of Hastings, as the re
ceiver is still suffering from an
ankle injury sustained in the
Florida game. The injury caused
him to miss the Auburn contest
two weeks ago.
"(Hastings) is day-to-day,” Goff
said. “It'll come down to the wire.”
Goff played down the fact that
Tech was ranked second in the na
tion and said the upcoming match
up was just another game.
“I don’t care if Tech is ranked
135th,” Goff said. “It’s Georgia
versus Georgia Tech.”
One player who may have a
hand in the outcome of the game is
senior place kicker John Kasay.
Kasay leads the team in scoring
with 58 points including 16 field
goals and 10 extra points. His stats
and performances earned Kasay
Third Team All-American honors
this season as determined by Foot
ball News.
“It’s a big honor,” Kasay said. “A
lot of people were very qualified to
win this award. I’m accepting it as
a representative of everybody
else.”
NOTES: Senior split end Sean
Hummings currently is suffering
from a hamstring injury and is
listed probable for Saturday.
Hockey Felker, the Mississippi
State football coach, resigned
Monday after five years with the
school.
