Unpleasant 'Dreams’

VARIETY NOTEBOOK
Watt lights up stage with
an alternative-rock opera
■y JOSH HUSKY
Til fta> a Black
It should have been obvious A
movie about souls should have
one of Its own
Alas. -What Dreams May
Come' Is a heartless, emotionally
empty film drtven oh-so-slowly
by visual effects and a noble
effort by Robin Williams
Effects do not a movie make,
though, as we’ve witnessed this
year with -Godzilla.*
'Armageddon' and "Lost In
Space " Though “What Dr earns"
Is quite different from these films
In theme. It’s remarkably close In
Its lack of spirit
The film follows pediatrician
Chris Nielsen (Wllliamsi, a man
who has It all A loving wife
(Annabella Bclorrai and two chil
dren But when the kids are
taken from them courtesy of a
fatal car crash, his life falls apart
Car wrecks aren't done with
this family, though A few years
later. Chris himself Is killed while
helping an Injured motorist In a
tunnel
This Is where “What Dreams'
hits Its strong points Chris Is
somehow transported to heaven,
which Is a variation on the
Catholic "create your own hell"
scenario His heaven is all his
own. built from his imagination
and memory of his wife’s paint
ings Everything is made of paint,
and squishes In his hands and
under his feet It truly Is a visual
wonder
What follows In the film has
been revealed In other reviews
and some commercials, but won’t
be here It can be said Chris has
to embark on a Journey that will
take him from heaven to hell, a
dark, gothic world that Is any
thing but pleasant
It’s not just hell that’s
unpleasant In this film, however.
The entire experience Is The dim
paints two stark visions of the
afterlife — heaven and hell — but
neither seem welcoming.
A Robin WHHams experi
ences the afterlife in “What
Dreams May Come.”
Hell Is obviously worse, wtth
visions straight from a Nine Inch
Nalls video. But heaven Is equally
icky It turns out to be a pompous
art critic’s fantasy, hill of flying
baby angels, long trumpets and
enormous staircases Yes, this
vision Is supposedly the heaven
of only one person, but that
seems like an easy way out for
the filmmakers
Director Vincent Ward ("Map
of the Human Heart”) would
have been braver to paint a heav
en that all of us would go to. We
don’t really get any vision of our
own afterlife, something the ads
seem to promise
“What Dreams May Come” has
no passion beneath It that will
make viewers truly care. That’s
not to say all films have to
Include heart — but this film
thinks It does, and that makes It
worse.

The Rio a Black
Modem audiences have seen
plenty of rock
operas in past
decades, but
an alternative-
rock opera?
Leave it to
Mike Watt,
longtime bass
hero and alter
native music
legend. to
come up with
the idea and
bring it to the
stage.
“It's inter
esting to see the reaction.” Watt
said of his recent tours in support
of “Contemplating the Engine
Room," the album that serves as
a metaphor for Watt's experience
with the Mlnutemen.
After 35 tours in 17 years. Watt
has seen trends come and go
while staying true to his own
roots in early '80s altema-punk
Watt first picked up a guitar at
age 13, when he said he "couldn't
even see all of the bass.” Thus his
friendship with fellow Minuteman
D. Boone was forged with music
as its backdrop. But when Boone
died in 1985, Watt said he felt a
serious loss. He called the opera
his way of dealing with the emo
tions he carries from those years.
“I still miss him in a lot of
ways,” Watt said. “But there's still
a spirit, a momentum.”
After the Mlnutemen, Watt fell
in wtth FIREHOSE, an alterna
tive group that enjoyed success
from the flannel shirt-wearing
crowd of the late '80s and early
'90s. He even helped out Porno for
Pyros a few years back when it
needed a bassist to tour. Today,
he still has a side project with
drummer Stephen Perry of Pomo
for Pyros and Jane's Addiction.
“I think you have to make it
interesting for yourself, or you'll
start to hate it and get jaded,” he
said of his long career
The current tour, which began
Sept. 21. involves 52 shows in 55
days. The object. Watt said, is “to
play that much so you don't have
to slow down and think “
“Contemplating the Engine
Room" was a very personal
undertaking for Watt, using the
metaphor of a day at sea to deal
with his first band experience
All his years as a musician
have led him through several
trends, and in his own way. he
said he has become a bit skepti
cal about the motivation behind
popular music at present
“Marketers take the young
people’s own culture and sell it to
them," Watt said.
"Almost everything is a hustle
on them.” he said, noting that the
underground movements of the
'70s and '80s were "more real."
A vested interest in modem
culture has him a bit depressed,
he said, but he feels the bands
that try to avoid corporate Influ
ence have kept things alive.
“If (alternative music I was Just
a guitar style and a haircut, then
it would have gone the way of
other fads," he said.
Even today, Watt remains
humble Fans often are surprised
to find him loading his own equip
ment after shows, he said, and
they wonder why he keeps him
self so low-key.
“Still going around playing
towns the old vaudeville way, I
feel very lucky," he said “It feels
actual.” •
Passion for playing has kept
Watt on the musical waters all
these years, and he isn’t looking
to come to port any time soon.
“I don't think of myself as
much of a musician," he said.
“(But)if they told me I couldn't
play anymore, I would fight it"
