"They're doing some differ

Manning. ” he said. "It’s a differ

about the guys and I can try to

The way Hisham Hemeda played tennis Monday
was a lot like the weather during his match against
Florida’s Jeff Morrison One moment the sun shined
brightly: the next it was lost In darkness behind the
clouds.
In the end. a dark cloud hung over Hemeda’s
head as he stormed off the court after a gut-wrench
ing 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 loss in the finals of the Southern
Collegiate Championships at Henry Peild Stadium.
“I just think it was a great match to watch,"
Georgia head coach Manuel Diaz said. “I think
Jeffrey Morrison showed that he is a great competi
tor.”
Morrison and Hemeda fought each other tough
In the first set. Both men held serve until Morrison
broke Hemeda at 6-5 to win the set.
But, momentum and emotion seemed to swing to
Hemeda In the second set as he broke Morrison in
the first game. The two would exchange service
breaks later before Hemeda broke Morrison for a
third time to go up 5-2 and serve out the set.
The Georgia senior broke serve again to start the
third set and went up 3-0. With teammates in the
stands predicting victory, things looked good.
Then the roof caved in.
“It was basically a lot of momentum swings,"
Morrison said. “I won the first set, and then he real
ly picked up his game in the beginning of the sec
ond. I hung in there for a little bit and broke back.
He broke me right back. But. starting the third set.
It's anybody's game."
During a third-set change over, Hemeda had his
legs stretched out by a trainer. Morrison saw this as
a potential weakness and planned his attack.
"I was thinking if I could make the points last
(longer). I would be alright." Morrison said. "And
that's what I did. I started really attacking him, and
he wasn't getting to the ball like he was In the begin
ning of the match, and he started missing more. I
just stayed on top of him and closed it out there.”
Hemeda lost his last three service games as

loss in the doubles semifinals.
Morrison went up 5-3. Facing match point, Hemeda
went for a new racket, but it wasn't enough, as
Morrison took the match by winning his sixth
straight game.
After the match, Diaz had nothing but praise for
Morrison He also saw the match as a learning expe
rience.
“I think he was bold and aggressive when he was
down in the third set," Diaz said. ' Hisham just
didn't put him away. I think it's a great lesson for
Hisham."
The Bulldogs will take some time off from compe
tition. They will play next in the ITA All-American
Championships in Austin, Texas, Oct. 15-18.
