shopped for some additions to
their dynamic duet upon their
arrival In Athens via Birmingham
in 1998.
Eventually they found what
they were looking for in the form
of locals Jackie Ferguson (bass)

R&B: Flood City Shootout in
30 words or less.
ioe: Pretty straightforward bar
band.
Ed: We're rock n’ roll, drawing
from classic songwriters like Alex
Chilton and Gram Parsons. From
three-chord big rockers to some
thing more mellow.
R&B: What do you look to for
inspiration?
Joe: Different ideas just come
to my mind. Whether it be starva
tion of the world or just getting
really f***ed up.
R&B: John C. Holmes or John
F. Kennedy?
Joe: JFK, if Marilyn Monroe

Diamond Dog pitches into hard
luck once more in home defeat
By GRAHAM GARRISON
The Red a Black
If numbers can be deceiving,
then the No. 19 Diamond Dogs
need look no further than pitch
er Rob Moravek as a prime
example. In a Tuesday night
start against Samford (13-19),
Moravek would pitch six innings
and allow only two runs in a
solid performance, but would
end up with his fourth loss of the
season as the Dogs fell 2-1.
Moravek came into the game
with a 1-3 record and a 7.61
ERA. He may have struggled
early in losses against No. 12
LSU and No. 24 Wake Forest,
but his record doesn't mirror the
improvements the sophomore
has made during the season.
“I guess he’s just been stuck
in games where we haven't
swung the bat well," Georgia
Coach Ron Polk said.
In a disappointing 5-3 loss to
UNC-Asheville two weeks ago,
Moravek pitched a complete
game, including a career-high 10
strikeouts, but the offense
wasn’t able to rally behind him.
In the final series game at
Auburn, Moravek left in the
sixth inning with a 7-3 lead in
hand, but Georgia couldn’t hold
and the Tigers would wind up
tying the game in the eighth and
winning it 9-8 in extra innings.
Losses against top teams are

one thing, but struggling against
lesser opponents is a trend the
Dogs would like to end.
“We're just taking these
games too lightly,” Moravek
said. “Coach Polk keeps on
telling us we’ve got to make sure
we fight really hard in these
games, because at the end of the
year, these games count.” ’

“We’re just taking these
games too lightly ...at
the end of the year, these

ROB MORAVEK
Diamond Dog Pitcher
Georgia had its chances to
put runs on the board. In the
first, the Dogs had the bases
loaded with one out, but pop-
ups by Josh Dorminy and Brian
Rainwater ended the inning.
In the bottom of the sixth,
recently named SEC player of
the week Doc Brooks sent a shot
out to center that looked good
for a two-run home run, but fell
short for a noisy out.
Ali the runs Samford needed
came off an RBI single by Ash
Gale in the third and a solo
home run in the fourth by Eddie
Harris.
Georgia center fielder Brian
Rainwater finally got the Dogs
on the board in the eighth with
two outs on an RBI single scor
ing Adam Swann.
But that would be all for the
batters, as the Dogs would end
up stranding 10 runners during
the game.
“Luck is just not on my side
right now,” Moravek said. “I hate
to say that, but it's really not. I
just have to keep my head up
and keep on trucking.”
Along with today's 7 p.m.
match-up with Wofford (ll-22),
the Dogs (19-11) have added a
couple of weekday games in the
month of April to make up for
two rainouts. Georgia will host
Alabama-Birmingham April 19
at 6:30 p.m., and USC-Aiken
April 19th at 7 p.m. to substitute
for cancellations of games
against Georgia Southern and
Tennessee.
