Kirouac looks to fill cleats
By MARC GINSBERG
The Ked a Black
r. For the last two seasons, the
placekicker position has been a
controversial situation for
:<Seorgia's football team.
Two years ago, fans were quite
,ViOcal in expressing discontent
“With Hap Hines' kicking perfor-
iimance. Then last season Hines
,,put. together a great senior year
statistically, yet the animosity
•from the previous year still influ
enced some fans' feelings.
iL; With Hines' graduation,
•though, the Bulldogs began a
search for a new placekicker this
..spring. If his current success per
sists. Brett Kirouac, a sopho-
"more from Duluth, will inherit
the job.
'. Seeing some game time on
“Special teams for kickoffs,
■ Kirouac, a sophomore, is really
..the only logical choice for the
job. Although David Classen, a
"reserve punter from last season,
and walk-on candidates Curtis
Malcom and Dustin Hill will com
pete, Kirouac has seen the most
time during the limited special
teams workouts thus far. And
he's improving by the day.
“He's doing a good Job,” spe
cial teams coach Phil Jones said.
“He’s getting more consistent
each day, and he has a great leg."
Realizing that he is Hines’
heir-apparent, Kirouac worked
hard in the off-season to fulfill his
duties.
“I lifted weights daily, and I
worked on my legs twice per
week, throwing in extra lifts that
I felt were conducive for kicking,"
Kirouac said. “I also kicked three
times per week.”
In spring practice, Kirouac
said that he tries to kick about 75
attempts per day, and that every
other practice he kicks on the
main practice field in front of the
coaches.
Placekicker is one of the
tougher mental positions, but
Kirouac is confident that he can
handle the pressure.
"I’ve just been working as
hard as I can, getting the basics
down, and I'm getting better
every day,” he said.
But then again, Kirouac
doesn't really feel that he's
inheriting a volatile position at
all.
"I thought [Hap) was brilliant
last year," Kirouac said. “I didn't
sit in the stands, but I didn't
notice any discontent.”
The only kicker to attempt
any field goals last year, Hines
posted better-than-average num
bers, including a 4-of-5 game
against Ole Miss that included a
51-yard field goal.
While Kirouac doesn’t have
any college statistics yet, his high
school numbers speak for them
selves. A Class AAAA All-State
team member in his senior year,
Kirouac hit a 54-yarder and set a
state record for most field goals
over 50-yards in a season with
four.
Placekicker is one of the few
positions at which the Bulldogs
