Dow plunges 500, then gains some back

Jones industrial average fell
more than 500 points today
before gaining some of it
back The Dow dropped
546 02, or 4.3 percent, to
12,086.06 before recovering
some ground. It was down
360.42, or 2.85 percent, at
12,271.84 with about a half
hour of trading left.
The broader Standard &
Poor's 500 index was down
42.11, or 2.91 percent, at

Student claimed to have
bomb, anthrax in scare

graduate student claiming to
have a bomb and anthrax
sparked a scare early Tuesday
that shut down the University
of Missouri-Rolla for several
hours, officials said.
Nearly two dozen people,
including a faculty member
and eight other students, were
quarantined after a white pow
dery substance was found

found when the man was taken

student who was apparently
depressed and upset about his
grades.
The incident started around
2:30 a.m. in a civil engineering
building on campus.

States is joining the Iraqi gov
ernment in a diplomatic ini
tiative inviting Iran and Syria
to a "neighbors meeting" on
stabilizing Iraq, Secretary of
State Condoleezza Rice said
Tuesday.
The move reflects a change
of approach by the adminis
tration to include Iran and
Syria in such talks,
Rice said the diplomatic
initiative is aimed at building
more support, both within
the Middle East and beyond.
