Campus recycles technology
By DANIEL O’CONNOR

Choosing to recycle your
obsolete computer Instead of
throwing it away may prevent
the contamination of your
drinking water.
To safely recycle electron
ics, the Athens-Clarke County
Solid Waste Department has
partnered with 5R Processors
Ltd. a large recycling compa
ny out of Atlanta.
Chris Burkett, head of
logistics at 5R Processors,
said he is trying to spread the
message that electronic waste
in landfills is an environmen
tal hazard.
••All kinds of electronics
have all kinds of different
components and all kinds of
different elements that really
contaminate ground water,”
Burkett said.
Lead, mercury and cadmi
um all potentially toxic to
humans are found in elec
tronics and can leak into the
ground water, he said.
Also, many computer and
television monitors contain a
tube of uranium, which gradu
ally can leak if buried in a
‘Eclectic’ band respects Theatre
By ANNA KRAKOVSKI

The Georgia Theatre can’t
seem like much for a band
like Umphrey’s McGee, who
has performed at festivals like
Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza and
All Good.
However, drummer Kris
Myers said that the band has
visited the Theatre several
times in the past and the
members respect it.
"So many incredible bands
have come through the
Georgia Theatre It's always a
pleasure for us to play there,"
he said "Athens has such a
fun college scene It reminds
us of our college years.”
Originally formed in 1997
on the Notre Dame campus,
Umphrey’s McGee has
attracted quite a fan base.
The band was deemed by
Rolling Stone magazine to
"have become odds-on
favorites in the next-Phish
sweepstakes,” and named
"rock’s undisputed lord of
sonic shape-shifting” by the
Washington Post.
Umphrey's McGee, com
posed of Brendan Bayliss,
Jake Cinninger, Joel
Cummins, Andy Farag, Kris
Myers and Ryan Stasik, will
be performing on the main
stage at the 10,000 Lakes
Festival in Minnesota July 18-
21, but will not be partaking

“That’s the biggest thing
toe want people to know,”
Burkett said. “It’s not a good
idea to let uranium get in the
ground water.”
Instead of putting poten
tial environmental hazards in
the landfill, ACC lets 5R
Processors pick up its elec
tronic waste, Buki Janssen,
the county’s waste produc
tion administrator, said.
People can recycle every
type of electronic for no cost
except for televisions at
the ACC landfill.
Janssen said 200,000
pounds of electronics have
been recycled by Athens-
Clarke County since August.
Because electronic devices
frequently become outdated
with technological advances,
a large number of computers,
VCRs, telephones and other
electronic goods are thrown
away, she said.
“The company we work
with (5R Processors) tries to
extend the life of the electron

ment for resale first and fore

plastic parts from the elec
tronics are recycled.
"The metal materials are
the most sought after
reuse/recycling materials, but
the plastics from the equip
ment can be made into lum
ber and landscaping stones,"
Janssen said.
ACC works with the
University on its recycling
program, but recycling elec
tronics on campus is not yet
available, Sam Whitmore, the
University’s recycling coordi
nator, said.
However, the University
does participate in a program
to refurbish and resell com
puters, he said.
If students want to recycle
electronics, they can carry
them to the ACC landfill on
Lexington Avenue.
Televisions cannot be
recycled in Athens because
recycling companies charge a
high price to take them,
Janssen said.

Myers said he was
