Landers
receives
special
honors
By TYLER ESTEP

Andy Landers received
some much deserved recogni
tion this past weekend as he
was inducted into the
Women’s Basketball Hall of
Fame in Knoxville, Tenn.
Landers was born in
Maryville. Tenn., a town cov
ering less than five square
miles, and began his coaching
career at Roane State in
Harriman, Tenn., a town of
less than 7.000 residents.
But Coach Landers has
made his name in Athens. In
an era of coaching carousels
and contract skipping, the
Georgia women’s basketball
program has long been able
to lean on the man that built
the program and continues to
push it toward excellence.
Landers became the
University’s first-ever full
time women's basketball
coach in 1979, and has yet to
relinquish the job.
While Landers’ career is
far from an end. the Hall of
Fame ceremony this past
weekend in Knoxville was
appropriate w'hen considered
alongside his humble begin
nings in the Volunteer State.

great leader, and you can
leam a lot from Coach,"

Athens Cine brings Rock Docs for AthFest
By JULIE LEUNG
For The Red & Black
People looking to see great
music at AthFest this year will
have five more opportunities to
do so courtesy of Athens Cin£.
The newly opened art house
cinema will be hosting a series
of music-based documentary
films in conjunction with the
annual music festival.
“AthFest wanted to include
more film components and
Athens Cin£ wanted to get more
involved in the community,”
said Kanala Lyons, public rela
tions director for Athens Cin£.
“It was a win-win situation."
Each of the films features an
inside look into a variety of
music genres, including lesser
known genres such as electroni
ca and southern rock, as well as
issues dealing with the music
industry itself.
In selecting the documen
taries, the program directors at
Athens Cin6 looked for films
reflecting the diversity of the
Athens music scene. They also
focused on lesser known pieces
not get the publicity otherwise.
All the screenings will feature
guest speakers and musicians,
many of whom were directly
students with 50 or more hours may claim
their tickets. The pick-up date for stu
dents with more than 15 credit hours is
Aug. 29, and underclassmen with less than
15 hours can get tickets Aug. 30.
Students must be registered for 12
hours worth of classes after the drop-add
period in order to sign up for tickets.
Students may claim tickets from
Stegeman Coliseum between 5 and 9 p.m.
beginning their designated day until
Aug. 30.
Eric Johnson said, “They are in for a
very packed schedule.”
The students' guides for the experi
ence include 12 orientation leaders
narrowed down from over 100 appli
cants.
Johnson said the leaders are chosen
based on their communication skills
and having a good, strong heart.
The leaders’ goal is to create an
atmosphere in which the students can
feel comfortable as they enter anew
environment.

The title, “Searching for the
