Wilson’s case appealed
NATION
ATLANTA Genarlow Wilsons joy was
short-lived
One minute, a judge ordered him released
from prison, saying the young mans 10 year
sentence for consensual sex between teens
was a "grave miscarriage of justice." Ninety
minutes later, Georgia's attorney general
said Wilson wasnt going anywhere the
state had appealed.
On Tuesday. Wilson s attorney was fight
ing to at least get him released on bond dur
ing the appeal process He is now 21 and has
been behind bars for more than 28 months.
"Yesterday, they did not consent to a
bond," attorney D .1 Bernstein said Tuesday
morning We are hopeful to hurry up and get
in front of a judge one, to get him out pend
ing an appeal, but even more importantly, to
get this madness over with "
Bernstein told CNN she was seeking a
hearing in Douglas County court, where
Wilson was convicted, even though the dis
trict attorney there opposes his release.
Wilson became a symbol for extreme
cases of getting tough on sex offenders when
he was sentenced to the mandatory 10 year
sentence for having consensual oral sex with
a 15-year-old girl in 2003, when Wilson was
17
If he had instead had sexual intercourse
with the teen, he would have fallen under
Georgia’s "Romeo and Juliet" exception But
under the law in 2003, oral sex for teens still
constituted aggravated child molestation
and carried a mandatory sentence, plus list
ing on the sex offender registry

Bush asks for Congress’ sup
port on immigration bill
WASHINGTON President Bush pressed
divided Republicans on Tuesday to support
him on immigration overhaul, saying “status
quo is unacceptable."
In a rare visit to the Capitol for lunch with
the Senate's GOP membership, Bush said
he recognized that immigration was an emo
tional issue and that many do not agree with
him Still, he said, “Now is the time to get it
done ”
The measure supported by the White
House, which legalizes up to 12 million
unlawful immigrants and tightens border
security, stalled last week in the face of
broad Republican opposition
Bush's effort to salvage the bill came as
key lawmakers reached for a deal that could
quickly revive the measure He needs to
change enough minds among GOP senators
to push through a top domestic priority.

American official
Undersecretary of State
Nicholas Bums, speaking to
reporters in Paris, said Iran

“Iran is now even transferring
arms to the Taliban in
Afghanistan.”
"It's a country that’s trying

In Afghanistan last week,
U.B. Defense Secretary
Robert Gates said Iranian

hands of Taliban fighters, but
stopped short of blaming the
government itself.

Accidental firefight
kills eight officers
KABUL, Afghanistan
Mistaking each other for the
enemy, Afghan police fired
four dozen grenades and U.S.-
led coalition troops fought
back with helicopter gunships
in a fierce battle that left
eight officers dead before
dawn Tuesday, officials said.
The deadly lapse in com
munication underscored the
wide gaps —and apparent
mistrust between US. and
Afghan security forces.
President Hamid Karzai's
office called the deaths "a
tragic incident" caused by a
lack of cooperation and com
munication.
U S. officials have said they
are wary of telling Afghan
forces about nighttime raids
by US. Special Forces, the
kind of operation apparently
being conducted early
Tuesday, out of fear the target
might be tipped off.
The U.S.-led coalition said
a joint coalition-Afghan force
on a mission against a sus
pected Taliban safehouse was
fired on first and responded
with their own weapons, then
summoned air support. No
US casualties were reported.
A presidential spokesman
also said police initiated the
shooting, but officers in the
eastern province of
Nangarhar said U S troops
fired first.
