Small-town singer finds big success
By ELI DILLARD
The Red & Black
Not many Grammy
nominated artists cgn perform
in Athens without creating a
commotion.
Pat Green, headliner for art
ists such as Keith Urban and
Dave Matthews Band, will take
a break from touring with
Kenny Chesney to play a venue
that always welcomes him.
“The Georgia Theatre is one
of my all-time favorite places to
play. It’s a good ole fashioned
music venue,” Green said.
Green attracts more than
just country music fans by add
ing other elements to his music.
“Pat Green is more of a Texas
country band. It combines
country music bands and jam
bands in a way that is very
appealing to college students,”
said Mary Leavitt, a junior biol
ogy mayor from Columbus.
“Being from the South,
we are used to very twangy
country music, but Pat Green is
very different from this stereo
type.”
Green is comfortable playing
in a college town. He got his
start in the “college music
scene” in his home state of
Texas. Green said he attended
Texas Tech, but was only inter
ested in music by the time he
graduated.
“I started playing at parties
and then bars wanted me one
by one,” Green said. “By the

his fans, there would be no one
listening to his music.”
Green’s current album,
“Cannonball,” got him nominat
ed for three Grammys.
After visiting Athens, he will
play about 15-20 shows before
the end of the year.
Green is sure his record label,
Sony BMG, will expand his
career.
“It’s a great record label and
one of the biggest in the world,”
Green said.
This album has been out
since August, but Green plans
on going into the record studio
in November to record anew
one, he said.
“You can expect to be able to
dance and sing along to his
music. I have been to a few of
his shows and each one has
been very entertaining because I
know a good bit of his songs,”
Leavitt said.
[His songs] sound like nor
mal country lyrics, except with a
different type of time, and are
usually about love, she said.

Activities fair boosts student
involvement in clubs, groups
By ELI DILLARD
The Red & Black
Football season has begun,
and many students are enjoying
their favorite fall hobby: being a
Georgia fan.
But once the season ends, a
simple solution to the “post
season syndrome” is campus
organizations.
The annual Fall Activities
Fair’s host, the Center for
Student Organizations, is a
new organization dedicated to
the clubs and groups on cam
pus.
The groups will be scattered
outside the Tate Student
Center with information.
Josh Podvin, director of
Center for Student
Organizations, said there will be
about 130 organizations present
and recruiting new members.
“We have more than 500 stu
dent groups, so we always have
a wailing list of people trying to
be at the fair,” Podvin said.
Groups on the waiting list
can come try for a spot in the
morning. The organization has
to cut off the number of groups
because Tate can only hold 130,
he said.
Although groups want to
gain memberships, they also
want to better their name rec
ognition.
“The activities fair is not an
opportunity solely to increase
