Dogs aim to climb,
break losing streak

The road to victory has
been hard to find of late
for the Georgia volleyball
team. Hoping to break a
three-match losing streak,
the team will host South
Carolina and Florida this
weekend in Athens.
The Bulldogs (13-7, 4-6
SEC) have lost consecu
tive games to conference
opponents Arkansas,
Mississippi State and
Alabama.

“One thing we can really
go off of is how we played
against those teams the
first time,” assistant coach
Jennifer Gandolph said.
The team swept South
Carolina (9-10, 2-8 SEC) in
September and played
Florida tough before losing
3-1.
With 10 matches remain
ing in the season, the team
stands in a tie for seventh
place with Arkansas.
Gandolph understands the
importance of these two
games.
“This weekend is going
to give us a good test,” she
said. “This match against
South Carolina can really

The Bulldogs will play
South Carolina tonight,
hoping to sweep the sea
son series for the second
time in three seasons. The
team was able to get a 3-0
win in Columbia earlier
this season thanks to
strong performances from
Britta Buethe, Erika Clark
and Maria Taylor.
Against the Gators
(13-1, 9-1 SEC) the team
must attempt to keep
momentum, something
Clark admits the team has
struggled with.
“We kind of come out
strong, and it all goes
downhill from there. We
don’t intentionally lose our
energy but something
causes it to fade a little
bit,” she said.
In its first match against
Florida the team came out
and won the first game
before the Gators took the
match by winning three
straight games.
With no conference
tournament, the Bulldogs
must focus on making their
climb up the standings
within the final 10 games.
Georgia arranges date with new opponent
Georgia completed its 2008
schedule Thursday by setting a date
to play Central Michigan in Athens
on Sept. 6. This will be the first
meeting between the schools.
“We’re delighted that we’ve teamed
up with Central Michigan for the 2008
game in Athens,” athletic director
Damon Evans said in a news release.
“We were looking for a quality
Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly
Division 1-A) opponent, and we
found that in Central Michigan,
which won the Mid-American
Conference championship last year
and also defeated Middle Tennessee
in the Motor City Bowl.”
Georgia also added Coastal
Carolina to its schedule in 2011.

“I think a lot of the reason is we’re not letting a lot of
goals in on us,” senior captain Joni Vickers said. “Our
defense has done a spectacular job of holding teams off
and winning balls and doing what they can to help us
win.”

Dogs cut back in order
to prepare for Florida
The Bulldogs only practiced
Tuesday and Thursday this week
since they have a bye Saturday as
they rest for a meeting against
Florida next week. Richt said the
Bulldogs began working on some
new things in preparation.
“We began to install a few things
we felt comfortable enough to
install, and we’ll be able to reinforce
all that next week,” he said.
Univ. may grant Richt’s
wish for indoor facility
Two months ago Richt stated
the need for Georgia football to
receive an indoor facility. It is
possible that he might get his
wish.
On Thursday, a day after the
University Athletic Association
discussed a possible indoor facil
ity, Richt said he is excited
about the possibility of receiving
this.
“Hopefully it will be sooner than
we all think,” Richt said. “I’m as
encouraged as I’ve ever been to get

troublesome. Georgia has lost three straight games to
the Rebels, including a 3-0 shutout last season.
While Baker would be pleased to win the SEC, it’s
not something he’s focused on.
“I’m probably different than most,” he said. “I’m
not a big goal-oriented coach. I’m not sure that’s a
good thing or a bad thing. It’s never seemed to
hurt the team or been an asset. But if we take care of
the two games this week, we’re getting close to
fruition.”
this thing going.”
At the meeting on Wednesday,
the Athletic Association said it
was investigating options on
building an indoor facility, among
other facility improvements
around campus.
“The issue of an indoor practice
facility remains an issue with some
of the coaches,” University presi
dent Michael Adams said.
Richt said he will begin raising
funds as soon as he can in order to
help speed up the process.
“I’ll do whatever it takes to help
raise those funds,” he said.
