Local drama crew shines in ‘sleepy’ production
By JULIE LEUNG
The Red & Black
It’s easy to lose your head in Sleepy
Hollow but not so easy to make a killing
off of it.
Local theater troupe Rose of Athens
performed its production of “The
Legend of Sleepy Hollow” Saturday
night to a small audience of about 40
people.
However, the vivaciousness and
wholeheartedness of the acting made it
seem as if the six-person cast were per
forming to three times that number. The
energy of this musically tinged play never
slackened.
Set in a tiny New England town, the
story begins with the arrival of Ichabod
Crane, an awkward but extremely eligi
ble schoolmaster.
“He’s the city slicker that comes to
town and tries to show off to all the
girls,” said Lisa Cesnik, the play’s direc
tor. “He’s definitely the outsider and
comes across a little goofy and eccen
tric.”
Ichabod immediately becomes
entranced by a wealthy farmer’s daugh
ter, Katrina Van Tassel, and attempts to
woo her.
Unfortunately, Katrina is also the sub
ject of young Brom Bones’ affections.
Both men begin a comical attention
grabbing war to win her love.
All the while, the legend of a ghostly
beheaded Hessian still searching for his
head lurks in the background.
The goofy and eccentric Ichabod
Crane was cunningly portrayed by local
theater star Allen Rowell.
Rowell’s quirky demeanor and over
the-top antics instantly made him one

count it,” Langston said.
He said the secret to a
successful scream is in the
misdirection.
“Get them looking one
way and scare them from
another,” he said. “That’s
what we feed on.”
The human condition
does some peculiar things
when fed upon in such a
way. Langston and his vol
unteer actors have plenty
of embarrassing stories to
share.
“I had a kid who came
in and got so scared he
actually went backward
and his family left him,”
said Matt Rogers, a high
school sophomore from
Winder who works in the
Vortex of Terror. “When he
came back, he just got
down in a fetal position.
Finally, I had to help him
get back out.”
If reverting to infantile
stances doesn’t sound
appealing, Night of
Screams also is looking for
more volunteers to partici
pate as monsters.

of the most lovable characters in the
play.
“He’s very sincere about the image he
tries to portray,” Rowell said, referring to
his character. “He would be dismayed
that others find him goofy.”
Also worth mentioning was Maria
Moody’s flawless portrayal pf snooty and
vain Katrina Van Tassel. Imagine an 18th
century Paris Hilton prancing about on
stage.
But perhaps the biggest achievement
was the wonderfully detailed and versa
tile costumes by Jennie Alvemaz.
Even though the six cast members
took on about four different roles each,
Alvemaz’s costumes facilitated seamless
changes while remaining true to the peri
od.
As for the much-anticipated Headless
Horseman?
Well, let’s just say it’s a spectacle that
rivals much-higher-budgeted produc
tions.
Even though it’s only in its second
season, Rose of Athens manages to pull
together a formidably good show.

Use frozen breaded

Parmesan cheese, and
add ground beef or tur
