Groups raise S2SK for Honor Plaza
By RYAN BURLE
The Red & Black
The ever-evolving archi
tectural landscape around
Tate II will change again with
the construction of the
$25,000 Sphinx Honor Plaza.
The plaza will feature an
inlaid depiction of the Arch
the dual representation of
the University and the State
of Georgia. Nine large granite
blocks will spiral out from
the center Arch design, rep
resenting the nine organiza
tions involved with the proj
ect.
To qualify for inclusion
within the plaza, organiza
tions had to possess several
qualities.
“They are University-wide,
representing a significant
portion of the student body,”
said Rqj Shah, president of
the Sphinx Club.
“Additionally, they have an
established history at the
University of at least 20 years
and are generally recognized
as a significant honor. Finally,
leadership and service to the
University are central to
membership selection.”

Rooks, along with representatives
from colleges and universities through
out the state, will address insurance
questions with officials from Pearce &

health insurance for the University,
before the end of the semester.
Beyond the health insurance rider,
the core issue is for graduate students to
continue to have a voice in their own
health insurance program and costs, he
said.

Sphinx the oldest hon

recognizes students, staff
and alumni who have made
significant contributions to
the University, state and
nation.
“When Sphinx was decid
ing to create this honor plaza,
we wanted other organiza
tions to get involved,” Shah
said. Sphinx also footed most
of the $25,000 bill.
Either other organizations
qualified to be part of the
Honor Plaza. The organiza
tions are Alpha Zeta,
AGHON, Blue Key Honor
Society, Omicron Delta
Kappa, Mortar Board, Order
of Omega, Dean William Tate
Honor Society and The Arch
Society.
The Sphinx Honor Society
is the oldest organization
being enshrined, having been
established on campus in
1896.
“Sphinx is the highest aca
demic honor on the
University,” said Shah.
“There have been only 600
members on campus since its
induction, with six to eight
members inducted every
tiveness of our university,” Winston said.
“It’s established in our strategic plan
that graduate student education is a
critical component as we
move forward with the [~
medical and engineering
schools.”
Although health insur- *
ance is increasing for all,
Winston said he’s glad

“This problem is a "OWES

level, but here we had a defined subset
being affected,” Winston said.

The plaza’s placement is
also noted for its location
between the Zell Miller
Learning Center and the Tate
Student Center. Dean William
Tate and Senator Zell Miller
are both alumni of Sphinx.
“I think the leadership rec
ognition project that we ded
icate today is an indication of
the leadership quality we
have at the University of
Georgia today,” University
President Michael Adams
said at the plaza dedication
Friday.
The dedication was held
on a particularly opportune
weekend for the groups. Not
only were increased numbers
of alumni in town for
Homecoming, but it was also
a reunion weekend of
Sphinx.
“One third of all living
[Sphinx] members came this
weekend to support the
plaza,” Shah said, noting the
reunion weekends are only
held every 10 to 12 years.

Jewish organization hosts event
to honor victims of Holocaust
By JULIA CARPENTER
The Red & Black
Nov. 9, 1938 the day many believe
marks the beginning of the Holocaust.
That evening, known as Kristallnacht
or “Night of the Broken Glass” 99
Jews in Germany and Austria were killed
and thousands more were sent to concen
tration camps as Nazis vandalized syna
gogues, Jewish homes and Jewish-owned
businesses.
Hillel at UGA, the University organiza
tion for Jewish students, and the Jewish
Federation of Greater Atlanta are holding
a glass blowing event today in the
Memorial Hall Plaza to commemorate the
71st anniversary of Kristallnacht.
“It’s important to know history so it
doesn’t repeat itself,” said Marni
Bronstein, a sophomore Hillel member
from Atlanta.
A local glassblower will be at the event,
crafting free handmade mezuzahs tra
ditional Jewish ornaments made to hang
on door posts for students, depending
on demand.
In the Jewish faith, mezuzahs symbol
ize a connection to God and serve as pro
tection for the house against evil. Inside
each glass case is a small prayer written
on a scroll of paper.
“Mezuzahs are very important to
Jewish culture,” said Hilary Gray, a junior
Hillel member from Atlanta. “They act
almost as a talisman.”
Gray said the program is meant to edu
cate students about the Holocaust and
the day it began.

Dean of Students said.
Bennett is the student
adviser for Sphinx, as well as
an honorary member.
Other organizations will
have the opportunity to have
their names added to the
plaza once they have met the
stated guidelines.
“After organizations are
here for 20-years and have
shown dedication to leader
ship on campus can they
become part of the circle,”
Bennett said.
Shah said that they hope
to add a kiosk to the Tate
Student Center that will pro
vide information about the
organizations honored as well
as a list of current members
and how to become mem
bers.
He said he hopes that the
plaza will inspire current and
future students to get
involved and become student
leaders.
“We hope this will encour
age students to learn about
these organizations and also
get students involved,” he
said, adding the plaza will be
complete by the end of the
year.

“You know, the Holocaust survivors
won’t be around much longer,” she said.
“Most were older when it happened and
have died or were so little when it hap
pened and are getting older.”
During the event today, Hillel is setting
up a “Wall of Tolerance” to encourage stu
dent writings or graffiti.
“We’re hoping students think about
what tolerance means to them,” said Joel
Marcovitch, University director of Hillel.
Marcovitch said he hopes the event will
give students of all religious backgrounds
a greater understanding of the Holocaust’s
effect on Jewish culture.
“We’re hoping to engage the campus in
a conversation about Holocaust remem
brance, about how to move into the next
realm,” Marcovitch said.
Hillel events aren’t just for Jewish stu
dents, said Gray, who encouraged all
University students to stop by the event.
“We like having a forum of conversa
tion, with them asking us questions about
our culture and us asking them questions
about their culture,” Gray said. “I mean,
everyone needs to know the Holocaust
existed, and it didn’t just affect Jews, it
was anyone who wasn’t German, blond
haired and blue-eyed.”
