Folk trio makes sweet
music with anew twist
By BRITTNEY HOLMES
Thk Red and Black
It’s time for the stereotypes to die.
Folk music is no longer defined as bor
ing, square or a one-dimensional type of
music.
The Carolina Chocolate Drops have
effortlessly blended folk music with the
more contemporary genres.
Comprised of three African American
musicians Dom Flemons, Rhiannon
Qiddens and Justin Robinson this
folk band established its name as one of
a kind.
The band, which is scheduled to per
form at the 40 Watt Club on June 12,
derived its name from a 1920s band
called the Tennessee Chocolate Drops.
While none of the members have any
formal folk music training, each have
had some experience within the musical
realm and bring their own style and flair
to the band.
They have many influences including
hip hop, country and other musical
genres, but their biggest musical influ
ence is Joe Thompson.
“{He] is a 91-year-old black fiddler,
who took us under his musical wing,"
Robinson said.
When most people hear of folk music,
they do not usually tie it to African
American heritage. Contrary to popular
belief, “black folk music” has a large his
tory within African American culture.
The blues, which was best illustrated
by artists such as Bessie Smith,
Memphis Minnie, Nat King Cole and

Wading in a kiddie pool might beat
the heat this summer, but for students
seeking something a little more adven
turous, kayaking may be the way to cool
off.
“For me, it’s a chance to get out of the
city, get into nature and relax a little
bit,” said Ryan Hines, a worker at the
Broad River Outpost, one of the estab
lishments where people can rent kayaks
and enter the river, which is approxi
mately 30 minutes northeast of Athens.
Hines, a white water rafter himself,
says he got his start on the Broad River
when he was only 10 years old.
“Being able to go out and experience
{kayaking] on your own without a lot of
risk is what is so attractive to me,” Hines
said.
The Broad River is a great place to
break into kayaking, without having to
spend a lot of money on expensive class
es or a guide, according to Hines.
“It’s a good rush, or a thrill, without a
lot of serious risk involved," Hines said.
“It’s just a very fun thing to look forward
too.”
Hines, however, stressed there are a
few adventurous moments on the trail,
all one has to do is look for them.
“There are things you can do to chal
lenge yourself on the river,” he said. “Try
and find some spots, do some freestyle
moves, things like that.”
Amateur thrill seekers aren’t the only
ones who will get a kick out of the Broad
River, it is also a great place for nature
lovers.
According to Hines, there are all kinds

music.
Today, however, many black music
lovers do not embrace folk music as
much as they do other genres of music.
“There are not a lot of black people
playing this type of music,” Robinson
said. “Another reason is that it’s often
associated with the South and country,
and blacks did not want to be associat
ed with that for long time. We want to
remedy that.”
Remedied it they have. The Carolina
Chocolate Drops act as a link between
folk and other genres of music. The
band's version of R&B artist Blu
Cantrell’s 2001 hit, “Hit’Em Up Style,”
has received over 200,000 views on
You Tube.
Its blend of string music and soulful
vocals has begun to blur the lines
between what is considered “contempo
rary” African American music.
The Carolina Chocolate Drops are
one of the few leaders in the music
industry that is working toward break
ing the barriers between various types
of music. Robinson said he believes art
ists are afraid to mix genres for fear the
industry won’t accept them. According

to Robinson, because record labels are
about making money, they sometimes
take creative control away from the art
ist especially if the music is something
not necessarily popular with the intend

“{ln the past] there was hillbilly and
race {or music for blacks)," Robinson
said. “This created the idea that black
people listened to different music than
white people, which is sometimes true,
but not always."
Robinson says this idea continues in
today’s society, hut there is some com
mon ground. *

they will then paddle back to The

“We have shrimp, steak, hamburgers,

The Sandbar is a great place for stu
dents to go, Phillips said.
“About 80 percent of our customers
are college kids,” Phillips said. “They just
come out and have great time hanging
out in the water.”
David Stallings, a rising University
senior recently took a trip on the Broad
River for the first time. “Broad River
doesn’t have the rapids that I look for
when going kayaking, but it makes up for
it with all the little pit stops,” Stallings
said.
Stallings, who considers himself an
amateur at kayaking, says that it isn’t a
hobby he would do every day, but it is a
great option to have for the summer
months.
For Stallings, one of the most enjoy
able experiences of the trip was seeing
all the turtles.
“The baby turtles let you paddle up
next them; they still won’t let you pet
them though,” Stallings said.
Near the end of Stallings’ kayaking
trip, it began to rain very heavily.
“It was big old fat rain,” he said. “I
had to paddle against the heavy rain
drops and I couldn’t see anything.”
The experience, however, did not ruin
his good time. “It was only a minor part
of the trip and it was still fun,” Stallings
said. “The rain water tasted good any
way.”
