Book rentals offer cheaper option

University students concerned with
high textbook bills might be able to
cut costs this semester by renting their
course requirements.
The University Bookstore has
adopted Rent-A-Text —a rental pro
gram that allows campus bookstores
to rent popular textbooks to students
for semester-long periods. The book
store is offering the program for the
first time this semester, after deciding
this spring to increase student buying
options.
“It provides a lot of choice and a lot
of flexibility.” said Jim Dwyer, manager
of the University Bookstore. “We’re
seeing a considerable number of stu
dents showing interest. Of course, this
is our first semester using it, so we
can’t really compare. But we think
there’s going to be considerable inter
est in the program.”
Dwyer said most students and par
ents were interested in renting because
of the lower cost. Eligible textbooks
rent at no less than, 50 percent of the

purchase price, making rental text
books an easy sell for students looking
to pay less.
Other program features include the
ability to pay rental fees using finan
cial aid or Bulldog Bucks, the ability to
rent available titled online and same
day availability. Students can also
write and highlight In rented texts
without fear of penalties, Dwyer said.
“As long as the book is returned to
us in a usable format, there will no
additional fees. It’s just like the buy
back program,” he said.
Trey Bennett, a first-year law stu
dent from Gainesville, said the cheaper
costs offered by the rental program
were causing him to consider his
options.
“I’m buying, mostly, but I might be
renting one,” he said. “I’m spending
$750 on books, so I’m going to save S3O
if I can.”
Rental availability is determined by
a list supplied on the Rent-A-Text web
site. Dwyer said. Most books that make
the lists are common titles that appear

quently are often not made available
for rental.
“If a professor wants to make a title
available for rental regardless of
updates, then they will go Into an
agreement to use that book for a set
number of semesters," Dwyer said.
“Typically we’re looking for three to
four semesters of usage out of that
book.”
Tom Webster, a first-year from
Marietta, said he hoped to rent some
of his textbooks, but was uncertain
whether all of his required materials
would be available, as he is taking
Intermediate Latin, a class without a
textbook.
Dwyer said the University Bookstore
plans for the program to provide stu
dents with better options to fit their
needs. He said the bookstore could not
analyze the success of the new pro
gram yet, but hoped to receive feed
back and criticism from the initial
semester.
“We’re really excited about this pro
gram," he said. “We're really anxious to
hear student feedback and to see how
the program went for them.”

CRIME NOTEBOOK
No brotherly love after arrest warrant issued
University police have Issued an arrest war
rant for Ronald James Seib after an altercation
at a fraternity house on Aug. 17. Seib now faces
a battery charge after he allegedly attacked
Michael Shane Lovlngood Jr. while attending a
function at the Kappa Sigma fraternity house,
according to a University Police report.
“Nothing too serious,” Lovlngood said of
injuries sustained during the attack. “I have
bruises on my head, scratches on my back and
a cigarette bum on my chest.” This is not the
fraternity brothers’ first incident.
“He broke into my house last year, but I
didn’t report it to the police,” Lovlngood said.
Lovlngood said the altercation began when
he offered to put their past behind them. Seib
allegedly responded by throwing a drink in
Lovingood’s face then striking him.
“What James has done is wrong,” Lovlngood
said. “He’s done it for too long so somebody
had to hold him accountable. I’m not trying to
give him a bad name, I Just wasn’t going to let
him do it again.”
