If you think you’re dam

drink, you might be dam
aging it more the morning

According to the Food
and Drug Administration,
acetaminophen is one of
the most common pain
relievers in the nation, yet
it can also be the cause of
liver failure and death.
Students often take this
over-the-counter drug, but
they know it by its brand
name— Tylenol. Tylenol is
a medication that can
become toxic if it interacts
with alcohol in the body,
but many students use it
to alleviate a hangover
after a night of heavy drink

Residents work to prevent crime in their neighborhood
By DALLAS DUNCAN
The Red & Black
Editor’s Note: Last year, The Red &
Black began compiling crime data to
create an online crime map. For this
Tuesday series we took that crime
data and found the 10 most crime
ridden residential streets in Athens-
Clarke County. With Jan. 1 as our
starting date, we tallied the crimes.
Crime is always happening, and the
list may change over time. Vine Street
is fifth in the series.
Samuel Lane was bom on Vine
Street in 1932, when it was still
an unpaved road called Day
Street.
Seventy-eight years later, he still
sits on his front porch, watching the
traffic roar past a street where Athens
Housing Authority residences and
low-income homes are Juxtaposed
with stately, obviously higher-end
houses.

Religion on wheels comes to Jewish students
Rabbi adopts
mobile tactics
By PAIGE VARNER
The Red & Black
What may appear to be a
makeshift tailgating tent on the
bed of a pickup truck is actually
a sign of God’s embrace.
That’s how Rabbi Michoei
Refson, co-director of the
Chabad Jewish student center,
described the “mobile sukkah”
he is driving around campus
today.

holiday of Sukkot Hebrew for

Lane said the area was once a
quiet street, but not anymore. Now,
Vine Street ranks on The Red &
Black’s list of Athens-Clarke County’s
most crime-filled residential areas.
It’s a ranking Lane said he was sur
prised by his only experiences with
crime here were a break-in 15 years
ago and a more recent occurrence
where his car door lock was broken
off.
Chris Wilson, a University alumnus
from Canton, has lived on Vine Street
since July 15.
“The police officer told us that we
shouldn’t have moved here. It was
the first thing he said,” Wilson said.
“We have a nice TV that came with
the house and he said that would get
stolen soon.”
Since Jan. 1, more than 40 report
ed crimes graced the desks of the

Police Departments regarding Vine
Street. Seventeen of the crimes
occurred on the 500 block area and
six on the 100 block.
Twelve counts of entering auto,
eight forms of assault, nine forms of
battery, three burglaries, four thefts
by taking, two robberies, one DUI,
one theft by receiving, one terroristic
act or threat, one count of breaking
and entering, one theft and one stalk
ing were reported.
“Maybe the second week we had a
break-in to a car, and then the week
after that we had a break-in into
another car and then the week after
that my car got rummaged through,”
Wilson said.
Wilson’s doors were unlocked when
his vehicle was rummaged through.

ebrating Thursday, Jews are
encouraged to spend as much
time em they can in a makeshift
tent called a sukkah.
The tents remind Jews of the
temporary dwellings in which
the ancient Israelites lived.
As God protected the
Israelites who wandered 40 years
in the wilderness, so he protects
Jews today, Refson said.
Spending time in a sukkah
serves another purpose too.
“You go out of your comfort
zone and realize what’s impor
tant to you family and Mends,”
Refson said.

Street, but Refson wanted to
assemble a mobile version so
students could celebrate on
campus without making a spe
cial trip home or to the Chabad
house.
“The main reason is because
if people aren’t able to come to
the sukkah, let the sukkah come
to the people,” he said.
Jordan Edelstein, a junior
from Alpharetta, said while grow
ing up, his family built a sukkah
on his back porch. He’d never
seen a mobile version before.
Though he said he’s not really
religious, he wants to pay hom
