DOGS: Statues sold online

out transporting statues
until 11 p.m. Saturday.
“People can still see them.
Just in different loca
tions.”
Reaction to the loss
was mixed.
“I’m kind of conflicted
about it,” said Stephen
Thompson, a senior from
Savannah and SGA vice
president. “I’ve taken pic
tures on [Caesar] and he’s
a wonderful landmark, but
if he was auctioned off and
the money went to a good
cause then I couldn’t be
angry.”
Blane Marable. execu
tive director of the Georgia
FFA Alumni Association
and owner of Blane
Marable Photography, cre
ated a Facebook event
requesting the return of
Caesar to Broad Street.
“[Caesar] and the Arch
are probably the most
identified symbols of
downtown that people
request to take photos
with," he said.
Not all of the statues
are displaced, Walters
said. Glory, Glory Chick-
Fil-Uga still stands in front
of the Barnett Shoals res
taurant, for example, and
the dog in front of BB&T
bank downtown remains
as well. Others, such as
Reflections of a Classic
City and Dogwood Bark,
found homes elsewhere
those two sold on eßay to
Bulldog fans in Virginia.
After the 32 dogs
involved in the 2003 proj
ect were put in place.
Walters said additional
companies. businesses
and individuals purchased
dogs for display.

A Caesar Dawgustus stood at the corner of
Broad Street and College Avenue. He was part
of an art project that began in 2003.
Unlike the original stat
ues which were spon
sored by local businesses
but owned by the club
these newer dogs are
owned entirely by the pur
chasers. The original dogs
are now owned either by
their sponsors or by those
who purchased them for
between SI,OOO and $1,500
on the eßay auction.
Walters said the eßay
auction raised more than
$20,000 for AIDS Athens.
This was not one of the
original organizations ben
efitting from the 2003 proj
ect. Those organizations
received money from the
SIOO,OOO raised when min
iature replicas of the 32
original bulldogs were auc
tioned off.
Gena Perry, a senior
from Gray, said she was
distraught by the reloca
tion of the dogs.

“I understand that they
wanted to make money,
but like most traditions in
Athens, Caesar is a price
less tradition that should
be left alone,” she said.
Walters said the club
was considering new proj

“It’s definitely some

Tommy Lynn, a senior

one sense, it was probably
a good thing Caesar’s cor

“I can’t say I blame

downtown all the time and
probably needed to
detox."

Bed bugs: they’ve Invaded Denver,
Baltimore and even Howard Stem’s office.
Now University Housing is working to
provide programs that will prevent cases
of the blood-feeding pests on campus.
Reports of bed bug infestations have
flooded national news during the past few
weeks. Infestation problems have been
reported in major cities across the nation,
and problems with the pests have even
been discussed in Canada.
Gerry Kowalski, executive director of
University Housing, said there have been
no cases of bed bugs in University dorms
so far this year.
“We have two isolated cases in family
housing, and those have been contained,”
he said. “If we had a report like we have in
Family Graduate Housing, we would try
to identify the area and isolate it as quick
ly as possible.”
Bed bugs feed on blood, and normally
hide in crevices and hard to reach areas,
such as bed frames, curtains and mattress
seams. To prevent bed bugs from moving
into hard-to-reach areas. University hous
ing has taken measures such as providing
mattresses with inverted seams and
replacing many dorm beds with new bed
frames, Kowalski said.
“We’re fortunate that nothing has hap
pened up to this point,” he said. “But
we're in the process of creating an educa
tional campaign to help prevent bed bugs
from happening.”
Kris Harrison, service manager at
Lavender Pest Control in Athens, said
getting rid of the pests often required a
iong process including cleaning out the
infested room and washing all clothes
that might be in the room.

CRIME NOTEBOOK
Student asks to be
arrested; officers comply
After nights full of cry
ing students begging not
to be arrested, it must be
refreshing for officers when
the offender is literally ask
ing to go to jail.
University student
Michael Douglas Colon, 23,
was arrested and charged
with public intoxication
and criminal trespass at 2
a.m. Sunday.
According to an
Athens-Clarke County
Police report, Colon’s night
began going downhill after
he was asked to leave 283
Bar because he was “caus
ing a disturbance,” a com
plainant told the arresting
officer.
After being asked to
leave. Colon reportedly
“laid down on the floor and
began yelling for them to
call the police," according
to the report.

Colon got off the ground
and told the police he
“needed” to be taken to

The officer then told
Colon that would not be
necessary and he simply
needed to leave the bar.
Colon continued

officer “only divine inter

As he was placed under

Colon “began screaming at

Litter bug arrested
University student
Dana Amanda Linzy, 23.
was arrested and charged
with public intoxication
and littering after an offi

High heat, freezing temperatures and
harsh chemicals are all good at-home
extermination methods, but many
University students say they plan to rely
on simple cleanliness as a bed bug deter
rent if they’re even concerned at all.
Julia Carpenter
you have to do a lot more than spray an
insecticide,” he said. “The customer has
to go in and prepare everything, take
everything out of the room and wash
everything.”
Kowalski said bed bug problems nor
mally don’t originate from sanitation
problems and don't cause serious health
issues.
Harrison said there had been an
increased number of bed bug reports over
the past three years in Athens.
“Going back ten years, we might have
had one or two cases that I handled per
sonally,” he said. “From three years back,
it’s been consistently getting more fre
quent.”
He also said it was hard to quantify
how many cases Lavender Pest Control
had seen over the past few years, because
of cases occurring in places such as apart
ments and hotels.
“If you have one multi-complex, it may
be one customer, but they may have them
in a hundred rooms,” he said. “It’s chal
lenging when you have them in multi
units. If it happens, then they’re harder to
get rid of and they spread more easily,
because people move between rooms and
spread them.”
Kowalski said students could reduce
their risk of infestation by thoroughly
checking used furniture such as futons.
“Bed bugs are carried in with what
people bring in with them,” he said. “It
would be important if that student has a
used futon to check if there are bed
bugs.”
However, he said though students
should work to prevent infestations, they
shouldn’t be too worried about damage
caused by the insect.
“They’re really more of a nuisance,” he
said. “But we live in a society that really
doesn’t tolerate bugs anyway."

According to the ACC
police report, Linzy was
seen crossing Broad Street
near Spring Street when
she stumbled and dropped
food.
The arresting officer
then reported seeing her
pick up the food and throw
it over her head “all over
the street and sidewalk."
When Instructed to pick
up the garbage, Linzy
reportedly told the officer,
“No I won’t!”
The officer also report
ed a “strong odor of alco

breath, red glassy eyes and
slurred speech.”
She was then placed
under arrest and trans
