At the University, groups
such as Young Democrats
and College Republicans help
students get involved in poli
tics. But arguably, money is
more important to candi
dates than support, and
University employees have
contributed more than
$22,000 to political candi
dates and organizations in
the 2010 election cycle.
“Money is the mother’s
milk of politics, especially if
you’re running in a statewide
contest,” said Charles
Bullock, a professor of politi
cal science. “How do you even
begin to introduce yourself to
nine and a half million
Georgians?”
Candidates for political
office need money for TV air
time, polling, yard signs and
employees to work for them,
Bullock said. Candidates for
state positions need more
money than candidates for
local office, because they
have to make themselves
known to a larger constitu
ency.
According to the Center
for Responsive Politics, 46
self-reported University
employees made a total of 78
political donations during
the 2010 election cycle, which
includes the 2009 and 2010
calendar years. After check
ing with the University’s
Human Resources depart
ment, it was discovered 12 of
those 46 donors do not actu
ally work at the University,
and the data was adjusted
accordingly. Bullock said that
donations of less than slOl

Residents say negative stereotypes don’t hold true

The Red & Black
Editor’s note: Last year. The Red &
Black began compiling crime data to
create an online crime map. For this
semester-long Tuesday series we took
that crime data and found 10 residen
tial crime-ridden streets in Athens-
Clarke County. With Jan. 1, 2010 as our
starting date, we tallied the crimes on
the streets of the University’s home
county to create our list. Here is the
sixth entry, Pauidoe Street/Court/Circle.

said owner Bryant Williamson.
