Soccer shuts out \4uiderbilt for second SEC win
By TYLER ELROD
The Red & Black
The 17th-ranked Georgia soc
cer team rebounded from
Friday’s 1-1 draw with Kentucky
by defeating Vanderbilt 1-0
Sunday in a nationally-televised
game.
The lone goal for the Bulldogs
(7-2-3, 2-0-1 SEC) came in the
first half off the foot of senior for
ward Marah Falle.
“I think we realized that this
is our last home game for a little
while, we’re going to be on the
road for the next two weeks. So
we wanted to close our home
stretch of the season with a high
note,” sophomore goalkeeper
Ashley Baker said.
Falle's goal came in the 15th
minute, as senior midfielder Traci
Dreesen sent a perfect ball past
Vanderbilt's left back right onto
the foot of Falle. Facing a one
on-three situation, Falle pulled
the trigger and sent the shot
right over Vanderbilt keeper
Rachel Bachtel’s head and into
the net.

That was fun. It’s still there a

Dreesen to play her in behind.
That’s one that stood up. We
missed a lot of great opportuni
ties after that but one goal was
enough today,” head coach Steve
Holeman said. “Last Sunday, and
Friday night and last Friday
night we’ve had great first halves.
We just haven’t been able to get
the ball in the net.”
Missed opportunities was the
theme for both teams Sunday as
Vanderbilt (4-7-1, 0-3-1 SEC) had
their fair share of scoring chanc
es as well.
In the second half, Georgia
was called for a handball in the
box, resulting in a penalty kick
opportunity for the Vanderbilt
Commodores. However, Vandy
failed to capitalize as the shot
went off the right post as Baker
guessed the right direction and
seemingly got the slightest of
touches on the ball.
“I was just confident. In a situ
ation like that you just have to
read the player, make a guess
and just go,” Baker said.
Vanderbilt’s next big chance
came later in the second half, as
Baker was caught off her line.
The Commodores’ Megan

nities.
“It’s keeping us from that
strict bluegrass world in a
way,” Erwin said. “If we were a
straight-up bluegrass band,
there would be a lot of things
that wouldn’t have come our
way. For example, I don’t
think our Shows would be the
same. I don’t think we would
have played AthFest this past
summer.”

Kinsella took the ball past Baker
and the Georgia defense only to
send it wide of the goal.
Besides those two miscues,
Georgia’s defense was the story
of the game, as they held a
Vanderbilt team that hasn’t
scored since Sept. 14 to just nine
shots, Georgia had 21.
“On any given day I definitely
feel comfortable with any of our
defenders. It was a team effort
and luckily the offense got one in
the first half and we didn't have
to drag it out. It was a nice
change,” Baker said.
Friday night, Georgia's 17th
ranked soccer team finished with
a disappointing 1-1 draw against
unranked SEC foe Kentucky
(6-4-1, 0-2-1 SEC). Georgia was
again plagued by a slow start,
going down 1-0 in the first half.
This week, Georgia heads to
the state of Mississippi to take
on Ole Miss (5-7-1, 1-3-0 SEC)
Friday and Mississippi State
(7-6-0, 0-4-0 SEC) Sunday.
However, Georgia must rectify
their scoring issues if they hope
to stay in the SEC title race.
“I think the good news is that
in our first four SEC games we’ve
recently released third full
length album, “What Are We
Gonna Do Now?”
Blending beauty, humor
and intelligence with non-tra
ditional musical elements like
the saxophone and flute,
Packway Handle Band is
inventive and refreshing.
“I don’t think any of us
really fit into that straight
bluegrass world, so in a way. I
guess it’s good that we didn’t
end up the way that we were
all predicting we may be a
lot more unhappy than we
already are, I don’t know,”
Erwin said, laughing.

Playcalling on offense is
the true problem for Dogs
The last question asked of
Georgia coach Mark Richt
following Saturday’s debacle
against Colorado was what his big:
gest concern was.
His answer? “Getting home
safe,” the coach said, before being
wisked away to the team bus. But
with all due respect Coach, I think
there are more pressing concerns.
The first thing that comes to
mind is the offensive playcalling.
How, pray tell, is offensive coor
dinator Mike Bobo still in charge of
the playcalling? In. the season
debut of receiver A.J. Green, argu
ably the most talented receiver in
the country, there were only two
passes thrown his direction in the
first quarter —and one was a
screen pass that Colorado knocked
down at the line of scrimmage.
Two.
The first time Green touched
the ball came on a reverse in a sec
ond quarter with the Bulldogs trail
ing 14-3. No offensive coordinator
worth his salt should go over a
quarter without having his best
offensive player touch the ball.
When Bobo called plays for Green,
he literally was head and shoulders
above the Colorado secondary, not
to mention at least three yards
ahead.
Two of Green’s first three catches
were for scores the first being of
the spectacular variety. Once Green
got involved, the offense could open
up, and it did, as the Bulldogs
seemed poised to run away with the
game in the second quarter.
Obviously you can't throw to No.
8 the Great every play, but you
need to threaten it. Let Murray
throw a deep ball here and there,
because Green could still catch it,
as he did on his second score. You

have a weapon that few secondar
ies, if any, can cover without using
double or triple coverage.
When Green was involved, the
offense clicked and the defense
played inspired. When he. wasn’t,
they looked off.
“You could see tonight just how
talented he is, and how dangerous
of a player he is,” Richt said. “He’s
a momentum and he did
[change momentum]. We reversed
the momentum of the game, and
the more plays he made our offense
spark.”
Green needs to be involved
offensively for Georgia to have any
chance, and it showed Saturday.
The offense is too vanilla and
fiat-out predictable. There’s no cre
ativity, and Bobo tries to force
gameplans that don’t fit the talent
he has on the field.
By nature, Georgia isn’t a spread
offense, but that doesn’t mean they
have to run to set up the pass,
especially when the offensive line
has struggled like it has.
Following last week’s embarrass
ing loss to Mississippi State, Richt
called out the coaching staff, and
that message clearly hasn't sunk in.
Bobo’s playcalling remained
stagnant and that must change. He
has to adopt a gameplan around the
talent he has or he needs to go.
