Only relics hate
gays in military
Welcome to the
Third World.
Joining us
today in this grand club of
disenfranchisement are
Iran, Cuba and Venezuela
—and about 13 other par
agons of large, productive
free-market democracies.
Oh. Wait. Right.
None of them is any of
those things. Instead, we
find ourselves rubbing
elbows with quasi-dicta
tors and demagogues...
esteemed company, eh?
And it’s all because a
few old white people think
the idea of open homosex
uality in the military is
icky.
So it was that two
weeks ago, by a margin of
13 votes, the National
Defense Authorization Act
didn’t move forward in the
Senate. With it, a measure
to repeal “Don’t Ask,
Don’t Tell" also stalled.
“This is not a serious
exercise,” said our dear
bespectacled minority
leader Sen. Mitch
McConnell of the
Democrats' addition to
the bill. “It’s a show.”
And he’d know from
show: this is the guy who
claimed that closing
Guantknamo Bay would
result in the release of
“murderers” into the
United States.
What of that former
moderate, one-time spear
head of the independent
movement within the
Republican Party John
McCain?
He’s the one who
kicked the whole shebang
off, calling for filibuster in
the first place.
Absolutely vibrating
with indignation, arms
akimbo, he dismissed the
measure on the floor of
the Senate, voice mid-war
ble as he aired the con
cerns he felt justified in
quashing a larger debate.
But victory didn’t seem
to ease his thoughts.
Not hours after suc
cessfully defeating the
measure, a press confer
ence saw him declare in
response to charges the
military was invading the
privacy of their servicemen
on the grounds of sexual
orientation, “They don’t.
They don’t. They don’t.”
Well, John, here’s some
thing to think about,
phrased exactly so you
don’t miss a syllable:
You’re wrong. You’re
wrong. You’re wrong.
In the words of former
Secretary of State Colin
Powell, the “Don’t Ask,
soundblle
fWhen you make a conscious effort to match
every girl on campus with your neon Nike tennis
shoes and shorts, it’s not cute. It’s actually pretty
weird.
fNext time you cross the street, try looking both
ways first (or at least one way), and if there is
something coming... don’t walk.
?Am I the only person on campus that thinks
Chacos are ugly? They make your feet look bigger.
flf this University wants to start saving money, it
can start by turning the AC up in the icebox we
call the MLC by 20 or 30 degrees.
f Thanks for wearing leggings as pants and letting
the world know whether or not you wore under
wear today. We really needed to know that.
fTo the couples who stop and make out in the
middle of the hallway during class change: I hope a
herd of students isn’t looking where they’re going
and run over you one day.
fSome day I want to go around campus and put
green wigs on all the girls with hideous fake tans.
fThe Digital Media Lab in the MLC is not for sit
ting with your Facebook open, gossiping on your
phone,

his alma mater, Texas A&M, in the Independence

?Why do the Ramsey hand-scanners always deny
me access? Perhaps this is why I never work out.

Don’t Tell” policy may
have mellowed in the 17
years since its implemen
tation, but the stories of
discharged men and
women continue to roll
forth
Dan Choi.
Margaret Witt.
How is it we remain the
dominant socioeconomic,
political and military
power, yet are turning
away those willing to serve
our country?
I look at the men and
women in uniform walking
through campus, curious:
what if they were gay?
Why should they be cut
off?
Some argue fear: the
fear of straight people in
uniform to accept the
assumed mass coming
out, and ensiling wave of
sexual insecurity that
would follow the repeal.
Why should have to
suffer to cater to the
wants of a smaller group?
All well and fine, except
that gays have always
been in the military.
Servicemen and -women
have long accepted it and
moved on.
Those left behind are
the highers-up, the dino
saurs, the relics. They
can’t leave well enough
alone, breaking the mutu
ally-agreed upon silence in
order to hunt down sup
posed gays.
All well and fine, except
that the people the mili
tary is supposed to pro
tect don’t agree. Nearly 75
percent of Americans sup
port striking down the
policy —a belief that's
held across partisan lines.
It’s just the government
—and those aforemen
tioned senior citizens
that is caught unawares
amidst an imaginary cul
ture war. A soon-sched
uled lame duck session
may provide the
Democrats, already fading,
a last gasp at grasping lib
eration.
Til then, with a Carrie
Bradshaw-esque shrug of
my shoulders, I can’t help
but ask:
In this age of “Don’t
Ask, Don’t Tell,” is there
anyone left who actually
doesn’t?

* When in the course of sport

base to a staff of Coaches, to
assume under the powers of
the NCAA, that rule-bound.
Holy Overseer of everything
Football, a decent respect to
the opinions of mankind
requires they should declare
the causes which impel Fans to

Leadership.
We hold these Truths to be
self-evident that all Coaches
are Not created Equal, that
few are endowed by the
Football Gods certain unalien

these are Creativity, Discipline
and the Pursuit of Greatness
that to secure such an
esteemed position. Coaches
are instituted among Fans,
deriving their just powers from
the approval of said fans.
Should a coaching Staff
become destructive of these
ends, it is the right of the Fans
to alter or abolish it, and to
Institute new Leadership.
History hath shown that
Fans will subjugate themselves

Poet Rumi not the right
LGBT representative
In the hall connecting Tate to
Tate 2, there is a display for “LGBT
Month.”
This display is helping to
advance tolerance via the proven
method of familiarizing a thing that
seems foreign and is thus easily
condemned. It’s hard to be a bigot
towards homosexuals when you see
Jane Lynch smiling down at you.
However, the architects selected
the poet Rumi as one of the LGBT
figures. There are people who are
gay, people who aren't and people
who lived centuries ago and so we
have no idea.
To make assumptions about
Rumi’s sexuality is not sound
scholarship, it’s not fair to Rumi
and it is unfit practice at a univer
sity with a code of honor
We may guess about Rumi,

The History of the present
Head Coach of the Bulldogs is
a history of repeated disap
pointments and injuries, all
developing the established
notion that this Bulldog team
of late is an embarrassment to
the SEC, and to College
Football in general.
He has refused his assent to
creative play-calling, that most
wholesome and necessary in
securing a needed Win.
He has refused to exercise a
standard of excellence and/or
outward thinking among assis
tant coaches; he has accepted
mediocrity for far too long.
He has obstructed the
development arid advance
ment of the finest recruits in
the land due to his cavalier,
“nice-guy” demeanor.
He has refused to instill dis
cipline in the offensive and
defensive lines. He has all but
neglected discipline entirely
over the course of the preced
ing four consecutive seasons.
He has made fans, investors,
advertisers, players, recruits,
coaches, et al. dependent on
His will alone. He has quar
tered wholesome, decent play
ers with lawbreakers and
fiends.
He has continued to settle
for mediocre bowls, falling
short of National
Championship consideration
multiple times throughout his
miserable reign, (honestly,
nobody cares about the Sugar
Bowl or the Chick-fll-A Bowl).
He has accepted a hefty pay
increase in 2008, amidst a glob
al recession, deeming him the
fifth-highest paid coach in the
game.
