and industry practitioners
by mid to late February.
Final selections of
Peabody winners are made
by a unanimous vote of the
Peabody Board.
“The Board is not bound
by committee recommenda
tions, however, and often
passes over items recom
mended,” said Horace
Newcomb, director of the
Peabody Awards and tele
communications professor, in
an e-mail. “That's because
the Board is considering rec
ommendations from all the
committees as well as works
the Board members And
compelling. At times the
Board awards a Peabody to a
program rejected by a com
mittee.”
The Peabodys are as pre
dictable as the similarity of
the submissions which is
not very much.
2010 Peabody Award recip
ients included popular televi
sion series such as ABC's
"Modem Family,” HBO's “No.
1 Ladies' Detective Agency"
and FOX’s “Glee;” "The
OxyContin Express,” an epi
sode of Current TV's
“Vanguard” series; “Up in
Smoke” by KCET- TV in Los
Angeles which covered the
growth of medical-marijuana
dispensaries; npr.org; and
international work such as
“Sichuan Earthquake: One
Year On,” produced in Hong
Kong by Now-TV
The diversity and quality
of Peabody Award recipients
is matched only by the
knowledge and experience of
those awarding the out
standing programs.
Newcomb became direc
tor of the Peabody Awards in
2001 after the death of Barry
Sherman, Newcomb’s prede
cessor and friend.

ly and found the discussions
the most vital consideration
of the significance of media I
had ever experienced,” said
Newcomb. “I accepted the
position because I think it's
a rare opportunity for a
group based in an academic
setting to have real influence
on the media industries and
professions.”
Juniors, seniors and grad
uate students of any disci
pline are eligible to apply,
though preference is granted
to Grady students. Ineligible
students include pre-journal
ism majors and Students
graduating before May 2011.
The student judge appli
cation asks for media literacy
writing and production
classes —and for internship
or professional media experi
ence as well as the appli
cant’s preferred judging cat
egory. Applicants are also
given room for a personal
statement to express their
qualifications and reasons
for applying.
When asked what type of
students he is looking for,
Kohn was not major-specific.
“All students, no prerequi
sites,” he said. “We've had
Terry and political science
students before.”
Students selected from
the preliminary round are
required to attend a screen
ing where they will compose
a critique of a sample pro
gram on the spot.
Regardless of an appli
cant’s major, certain person
al characteristics are still
sought after.
“We look for people who
have sharp critical skills and
can articulate them well,”
said Newcomb. “We ask
interested students to view

entry and write about it on

Student applications are
available in Grady depart
mental offices, the Grady
Business Office and from
Tom Hoover and Danna
Williams in the Peabody
Office.
Completed forms are due
to Hoover or Williams in the
Peabody Office by Friday.
Applicants selected to
move on will meet Oct. 25 for
the screening and critique;
final student judge selections
will be made by Nov. 12.
“On campus, I think stu
dents recognize and realize
the significance of the award
more directly. For those who
travel to New York with us
it's a real insight into the
power of the award in the
industries,” said Newcomb.
“My hope is that their work
with us will also be important
to potential employers when
they begin their own work in
the media industries.”
While the experience of
being a student judge is
unmatched in its value, the
award itself carries its own
prestige.
“Many friends in the
media industries have said to
me the Peabody is the most
important award they have
received,” Newcomb said.
“They consider it a true vali
dation of their work. And I
think we can have real influ
ence by finding and naming
the best of the best.”
All student judges will
receive free admission to the
70th annual Peabody Awards
reception held May 23, 2011,
at the Waldorf-Astoria in
New York City.

Two football commits
to play in Army bowl
By MITCH BLOMERT
The Red & Black
Another member of Georgia’s
2011 recruiting class was selected to
play in the U.S. Army All-American
Bowl when defensive end Sterling
Bailey was added to the East roster
last Friday.
Bailey is the ninth player named
to the East, which will play the
West’s top high school prospects on
Jan. 8 at the Alamodome in San
Antonio.
The 6-foot-5, 260-pound senior
from East Hall High School in
Gainesville is the second Georgia
commit chosen to play in high
school football’s biggest game.
Safety Corey Moore was also
named to the East roster on Sept.
24.
The Bulldogs are one of only five
teams with two or more commit
ments playing in the game.
Texas, Notre Dame and
Oklahoma State also have two,
while USC has five.
Bailey is a four-star prospect
ranked fifth in the nation among
defensive ends, according to Rivals,
com.
He committed to Georgia on May
14.
The Bulldogs have a chance for a
third commit in the game, should
defensive back Damian Swann
choose the Bulldogs. Swann was
selected to the East roster on Sept.
28 and has narrowed down his col
lege choices to Georgia and
Alabama.
The U.S. Army All-American
Bowl will air on NBC.

RECRUITING NOTEBOOK
Running back prospect announc
es Alabama as leader
Running back prospect Isaiah
Crowell has spent most of his senior
football season stuck in the middle
of a recruiting tug-of-war between
Georgia and Alabama.
That changed Saturday, when
Crowell said his favorite is the
Crimson Tide.
The five-star standout from
Carver High School was in
Tuscaloosa last Saturday for
Alabama’s 31-6 win against Florida
and was impressed with the top
ranked home team.
Crowell told Chip
Towers of the /..AteSsiv
Atlanta Journal-
Constitution that he ffIMH
had “a great expert
ence” and that he
enjoyed being
around the coaches
and players during
their pre-game prep
aration. BAILEY
If Crowell picks
Alabama, it is likely
he’ll sit behind Trent Richardson in
the depth chart next season.
Meanwhile, picking Georgia
could boost Crowell's playing time
as a freshman. Crowell plans to visit
Athens before the season is over.
Crowell, the second-ranked run
ning back in the country according
to Bcout.com, will officially commit
after the end of his high school sea
son.
