Swarm Tour
I 1 eiody? Harmony? Rhythm? Hey, it’s not
l\/l that Katherine Youn 9 and Jacob Wick
I ¥ I don't appreciate these elements of
lusic. But there’s a lot more out there.
I “There's also timbre and noise and other
fcrameters you can think about on an equiva-
Int scale,’ said Young, one-third of Friday’s
lecret Swarm show, an exhibition of music that
Irplores just what music and the instruments
Bat make it really are, or what they can be.
I “Where some bands focus mostly on rhythm,
Bat's what’s really awesome about them, or
feme bands really focus on beautiful harmonic
leal arrangements ... we’re kind of focusing on
Ime different aspects of music,” Young said.
I The show Friday will feature three solo sets
i Wick (trumpet), Young (bassoon) and local
litarist and front man of multi-genre jazz band
jenosha Kid, Dan Nettles.
I Each will be wholly different than, at the very
last, anything else going on in Athens that
Ight
I Young's time will be filled by four to five com
fcsitions that vary from melodic to audio-explo-
Itions. A key interest will be the tones between
fcrmal tones in the classical tradition.
I On some pieces, Young says, “I kind of plant
|y|elf with my hands and don't move my fingers
|l that much, and I try to explore the overtones
Bx(f the space in between and around a narrow
Itch range of the instrument.”
I Those “in-between" notes, generally frowned
fcort in classical bassoon circles, are reached

Covrtmt Jacob Wicb
A Jacob Wick (above) and Katherine
Young (right) will explore the sonic
limits off their instruments.
“There’s all this manipulation of the sound
that is done internally by the players, through
the embouchure and the throat and the air,”
Young said. “So very subtle changes in any of
those parameters will affect the note."
Young also uses a series of pedals and
amplifications so that sounds made, and primari
ly audible within, the instrument can be heard by
the audience. A pleasant side effect of that use,
brought on by necessity, is that it gives Young
more tools for making noises one would never
expect from, essentially, a tall wooden pipe.
Wick’s performance, entitled Swarm, is a
similar exploration into the sonic possibilities of
the trumpet, in which he views his instrument
more as a machine than an instrument.

What you see in the 30-minute performance
is Wick wrenching, cajoling, tricking and seduc

like anything but the Saints Go Marching In

Piece by piece, Wick dissembles his trumpet
while playing, creating everything from a static
kind of hiss to distant helicopter blades whirring.
“There is a score, but it’s mostly just instruc
tions,” Wick said.
Opening will be Nettles, who says he will be
exploring “the musician as machinery... medita
tions on re-arranging the mechanics of perform
ing on your instrument," he said.
He plans to produce a variety of non-tradi
