Dogs will bounce back from
losses with forward’s return
While the masses stuffed themselves
senseless on Thanksgiving —and
again ofT of leftovers in the days fol
lowing the Georgia men’s basketball team
was down in Orlando, foregoing the tradition
" “*? ner 40 Play in the Old Spice Classic.
The Bulldogs lost a double-overtime heart
breaker to undefeated Notre Dame
Thanksgiving day, then dropped another
close one against No. 20 Temple on Friday.
They made the trip partially worthwhile,
Dealing Manhattan Sunday before packing up
and heading home.
The tournament didn't quite go as planned
for Georgia, who entered the Old Spice
Classic undefeated and playing with confi
dence following a couple of come-from-behind
victories. But if there’s still a Thanksgiving
theme to be had, the Bulldogs have one thing
to be thankftil for, and they’ll be thankful all
season long.
Trey Thompkins is back.
The SEC Preseason Player of the Year
made his season debut against Notre Dame,
and while his numbers for the tournament
weren’t quite up to par with his usual output
14.7 points per game, 7.3 rebounds per
game there’s no reason to be worried.
Finally, Georgia (5-2) can start doing the
things it had prepared for in the offseason,
before Thompkins went down with a sprained
ankle.
The things that earned the team such high
praise from the media in the preseason, and
made coaches alert reporters that there was
more to the SEC East than Kentucky, Florida
or Tennessee.
The things that put Thompkins and Leslie
in the All-SEC first team to begin with. All
the dunks, the offense and the glamour.
Finally, all those things can be done. Just
give it some time.
I didn’t expect Thompkins to be red-hot
out of the gates after an injury that can be so
costly to a forward with a role such as his.
And I didn’t expect the team to be, either.
Head coach Mark Fox was forced to find
ways to redefine the team, and quickly, with
Santa came early this year
and even though I’ve been a
very naughty boy, he gave me
an amazing gift St.
Bemardus Christmas Ale.
This dark beer comes to us
good students from Brouwerij
St. Bemardus NV, located in
Belgium. That’s right, this
one’s a foreigner.
The style is listed as a
“Belgian strong dark ale,”
which really only means it’s
exactly like a Belgian strong
ale, but darker.
The beer pours pretty dark,
with a nice ruby hue to the
body of the beer. The head is a
nice tan color and is spectacu
larly creamy.
At this point you may be
asking yourself or a trusted
religious official “Why is it
called ‘Christmas Ale?’”
If anything is “Christmas”
about this beer it’s the aroma.
I’m talking nutmeg, cinnamon,
baking-bread, vanilla, clove,
candied fruits and brown
sugar. Jesus, it’s like my
Grandma's kitchen, except I
can get drunk.

The flavor is actually very
surprising.
Despite its aroma, it’s not
very sweet, unlike a lot of
other breweries’ Christmas
beers. The beer initially tastes
like dark fruits, but as you
swallow it, there is a “fresh
baked bread” quality to the
flavor.
There are mild hoppy char
acteristics to it, but they are
subtle.
This beer will warm your
soul. It has a ridiculous strong
alcohol-warmth to it.
In fact, I’m actually writing
this review in Antarctica, but
because of the beer, I feel like
I’m in the tropics. (Editor’s
note: Taylor has had one too
many of these beers. He is in
fact in Athens.)

Thompkins’ injury coming just a week before
the season started.
While the Bulldogs looked lost at times in
early-season squeakers against Mississippi
Valley State and Colorado, players started to
gel in their new roles, especially in the closing
minutes of each game.
Gerald Robinson, Travis Leslie and Jeremy
Price propped up Georgia’s scoring with per
formances in double figures. When the team
wasn’t missing a plethora of free throws,
things didn’t look so bad.
Now the players have to get out of their
comfort zone again, this time to make room
for Thompkins the same guy who made
them change their traditional, preseason
roles in the first place.
And Thompkins is coming back at a per
fect time. Conference play is still more than a
month away, which is plenty of time to reas
semble the team to its preseason hype.
Georgia hosts a 4-1 UAB team Friday,
which handed SEC title contender Arkansas
its first loss on Nov. 26. Then the Bulldogs hit
the road to face Georgia Tech on Tuesday in
Atlanta.
The Yellow Jackets share the same record
as Georgia and suffered a humiliating loss to
Kennesaw State earlier this month, but like
any ACC team, they provide another early
season challenge.
With that in mind, Bulldog basketball fans
should feel a little bit more comfortable
about the team’s recent shortcomings.
As we look forward from Thanksgiving,
Georgia can still be thankful Thompkins is
back.
