(N.C.W.C. News Service)
DECATUR, 111., — A bearded
young priest is preparing here
for an apostolate that could
change the course of world his
tory.
Father George A. Maloney,
S.J., is getting ready for the
day when Catholic priests are
admitted into the Soviet Union
to work for the conversion of
the Russian people.
Some two years ago Father
Maloney took the unusual step
of transferring from the
Church’s Latin Rite to the Rus
sian Byzantine Rite. In addition
he has devoted himself for
years to the study of Russian
Language and culture and Or
thodox religious beliefs.
Next summer he will go to
Rome, where for at least three
years he will study at the Pon
tifical Oriental Institute and the
Russian College (known as the
“Russicum”). He will be seeking
a doctorate in Oriental Russian
theology.
By the time his studies are
completed, Father Maloney said,
he hopes that Russia will be
open to priests. If not, he ex
pects to be assigned to the Rus
sian Institute at Fordham Uni
versity, New York. It is his am
bition to establish a magazine
for an exchange of views on
theological matters between
Catholics and Orthodox.
Father Maloney, who is com
pleting his year of tertianship at
the Jesuits’ St.' Joseph Hall here,
said his interest in the conver
sion of Russia began when he
first heard of the promises made
in this regard by the Blessed
Virgin at Fatima.
“I thought then that if Russia
was to be converted, it would
have to be through the work of
priests going into the country,”
he said.
He sought and obtained per
mission from his Jesuit superi
ors to change from the Latin
to the Russian Byzantine Rite.
Meanwhile, for three summers
he studied at Fordham.
In 1954 he went to Rome
where he continued his Russian
studies at the Russian College.
He was ordained in Rome in
1957 by Bishop Alexander Ev-
reinoff, a Byzantine Rite bishop
and native of St. Petersburg,
(now Leningrad), Russia, who
is residing in Rome.
Father Maloney has no illu
sions that the work of conver
sion would be easy if Russia
were opened to Catholic priests.
He said there are only about
250 priests of the Russian By
zantine Rite in the world and
they would simply be “swal
lowed up” in Ru'ssia.
Instead, he said, his apostolate
and that of other priests like
him must be conducted “on a
high intellectual level,” seeking
some form of approchement
with Orthodox theologians.
He pointed out that the prin
cipal theological questions sepa
rating Catholics and Orthodox
are the position of the pope in
the Church and the relationship
of Persons of the Blessed Trini
ty. The Magazine he hopes to
establish would be a medium
for Catholics and Orthodox to
“air their views” on these and
other subjects of disagreement.
Father Maloney, a native of
Green Bay, Wis., entered the
Jesuit Order in 1944. He studied
at the University of Wisconsin,
St. Louis University and Wood-
stock (Md.) College.
He emphasized that there is
no special Russian element in
his background to account for
his interest in Russian studies.
However, he said, his mother is
of Polish descent, a fact which
may have given him “an incli
nation to adapt to the Slavonic
temperament.”

REDS GAIN IN FRENCH MUNICIPAL
ELECTIONS; PRESENT FIRST MAJOR
CHALLENGE TO GAULLIST FORCES
(Radio, N.C.W.C. News Service)
PARIS — Battle-wise com
munists challenged the new po
litical domination of France’s
young Gaullist forces for the
first time by regaining most of
their supporters in nationwide
municipal elections.
The electoral results
pointed to a new shift
in public opinion since last
December, when right-wing ele
ments backing Gen. Charles de
Gaulle crushed the communists
as a parliamentary force and
gained overwhelming control of
the country’s new National As
sembly.

Results in France’s 12 major
cities, indicated that the
communists polled 522,917
votes out of a total of 2,013,143—
or approximately 25 per cent of
the popular vote — thus re
couping the severe losses they
suffered three months ago.
The Red recovery was not ev
ident in highly industrialized
areas, such as the workers’ dis
tricts of Paris and the cities of
Lyons, Marseilles, Le Havre and
St. Etienne. In Paris the com
munists obtained 29 seats, a gain
of two, out of a total of 90 mu
nicipal posts available.
As a result of the balloting,
communists can claim insuffi
cient representation in the Na
tional Assembly, where they
hold only 10 seats out of the 595
reserved for mainland France
after last December’s Gaullist
landslide.
Evidence of President de
Gaulle’s waning popularity was
seen in the action of the mass
of dissatisfied Frenchmen, who
resorted to voting for the com
munists to show their discon
tent with the new government’s
austerity measures.
Further evidence that the vot
ers are swinging to the left
again was seen in the fact that
the Independents, who share re
sponsibility for the austerity
program with the Gaullists, also
suffered setbacks. But the So
cialists, who claim to follow
policies of “constructive oppo
sition” to the government, man
aged to hold their own and even
made gains in some areas.
The main danger of strong
communist gains in the munici
pal elections would be felt in
April when France’s electoral
college, including mayors and
municipal councillors, will
choose new members for the na
tion’s upper House of Parlia
ment, the Senate.
