"SILENT SISTERS"
POPE
It will doubtless be of
interest to readers to learn
of the existence of a un
ique special Community for the
Deaf and the Hard-of-Hearing
in America, known as the Con
gregation of Little Sisters of
Our Lady of Seven Dolors,
founded in Montreal, Canada,
April 1, 1887, by the Sisters of
Charity of Providence by whom
it is governed and directed.
Because of the fact that per
sons handicapped by partial or
profound deafness are unable
to follow the exercises of Com
munity life with the hearing,
and since a number of deaf
girls were eager to embrace
the religious life, Canon Francis
Xavier Trepanier, first Chap
lain of the Institution for the
Deaf, decided to negotiate with
the major Superiors in their
favor. The result was the de
cision of the General Council
of the Community of Provi
dence, to open a Novitiate per
manently located at the Insti
tution, and to admit nine young
deaf ladies, the first candidates,
cording to their aptitude, such
as the sacristy, sewing and
weaving room^, infirmary,
kitchen, Social Service office
work, typing, the Secretarial
office, and the summer camp
for the children, or they do oth
er work for which normal hear
ing is not absolutely essential.
They are of course under the
guidance of the Mother Gen
eral of the Sisters of Provi
dence, the local Superior of the
Institution for the Deaf, and
the Mistress of Novices who is
also the Directress of the pro
fessed Sisters.
The Little Sisters have their
own separate Community room,
refectory and dormitory, also
their special Book of Rules and
Constitutions in French and
English, modelled with slight
variations, on the rules of the
Sisters of Charity of Provi
dence. Their holy habit is the
same as that of the Sisters of
Providence, with the exception
of a difference in the head
band as a distinguishing mark
five of whom persevered and k e tweeen them and the hearing
became the founding Sisters of Sisters with whom the y devote
this little “Community within a thems elves towards the educa-
Community,” the only one of its tlon and care dle Deaf,
kind in America. Since then the There is a pecuinary require-
Congregation has expanded and ment for board and the trous-
today there are 56 professed seau during the three years of
Sisters, 6 novices and 1 postu- Novitiate, and at profession
lant. Twenty-two Sisters have time a dowry of three hundred
since gone to their eternal re- dollars is expected. However
ward. And it is to the little
Community’s credit that not
one professed Sister has ever
left it, although many novices
and postulants have returned
to the world, not having had
the vocation.
Candidates who have reach
ed their twentieth year and
have been sufficiently educat- q.
ed, either at the School in
the Community will not refuse
any qualified candidate who is
unable to meet these require
ments.
The Little Sisters are French-
Canadians in the majority, with
the exception of sixteen from
the United States. Their life
work is confined to the Insti
tution for the Deaf (girls), and
the members are never sent
out to other Houses. They re
ceive the same training and
instruction in the religious life
as the hearing nuns, except
that the sign language and lip-
reading are used by their Mis
tress of Novices who is always
a hearing Sister of Providence
chosen from among those who
understand well the particular
needs of the Deaf.
Happy those who answer
yes to the Call of the Good
Master. Their treasure will be
in heaven, and even here be
low they will receive a hund
redfold in return for what they
sacrifice for Him and for souls.
Any American vocation-
minded girl who has the handi
cap of deafness, and conse
quently is unable to enter a
hearing Community, and is in
terested in applying as a can
didate with the desire of giving
herself to God for the welfare
of her sisters in affliction, may
apply to the Superior:

of serving the Holy See as a
sort of “Ambassador” to Italy,
constantly in contact with op
posing parties, with organiza
tions and groups of all kinds.
Among those who were to
take part in the consecration of
the new Bishop, Radini Tedeschi
picked out two Bergamo priests,
Angelo Roncalli and Guglieimo
Carozzi, now Archpriest pastor
of Seriate, near Bergamo.
PROPHECY
The consecration was Pius X’s
first since his election as Pope.
The importance of Bishop Rad
ini Tedeschi in the life and de
velopment of the future Pope
John can hardly be exaggerated.
The closeness and deep friend
ship of the two is best exem
plified in the long, detailed and
loving biography which Father
Roncalli wrote after his friend
and mentor died in his arms.
In it, he recalls two things of
the morning of the consecration.
One was that it was he who held
the Book of the Gospels against
the neck of the new Bishop,
signifying that the Bishop must
wear the yoke of Christ.
The second was that the Pope
embraced the new Bishop after
the consecration and whispered
in his ear that after he died he
would come immediately to take
the Bishop with him and that
they would be together for eter
nity. It was not until much later
that the Bishop understood the
meaning of these words. But it
is a fact that Pius X died on
August 20, 1914, and Radini
Tedeschi died two days later.
Shortly after the new bishop
took possession of his episcopal
see of Bergamo, he began look
ing for a secretary. He remem
bered Fathers Carozzi and Ron
calli who had assisted at his
consecration. Carozzi, whom the
Bishop talked to first, replied
that Roncalli was the proper
man for the post. The Bishop
took the advice.
