Majority Leader of House of Representatives
Denounces Soviet Attacks on Catholic Church
THIRTEEN
(N. C. W. C. News Service)'
W AS 11 INGTON—The a 11 a c k s
against the Catholic Church by
official Soviet newspapers and
“other actions of the Soviet Union
are causing many who believe in
world peace to wonder if the Sov
iet Union is sincere,” Representa
tive John W. McCormack of
Massachusetts, House majority
leader, asserted in a statement
issued here.
Mr. McCormack addressed him
self particularly to the recent
blast by the Soviet paper Izvestia,
which charged the thirty-two
Cardinals-dcsignate, and Cardinal-
designate Francis J. Spellman.
Archbishop of New York, in par
ticular, were “selected to spread
reactionary policies throughout
the world.” The House leader
said the charge could be ignored
if it wore not for the vicious
spirit behind such attacks.”
He ridiculed the assertion that
Cardinal-designate Spellman is a
“reactionary” and declared he “is
the opposite.” He said the Soviet
attacks appear to be a “deliberate
plan of misrepresentation aimed
to divide the people of countries
where western civilization exists.”
The full text of Mr. McCor
mack’s statement follows:
The baseless charges in the
Soviet controlled newspaper, tz-
vestia, which charged that the
thirty-two new Cardinal designates,
and particularly Cardinal-
designate Spellman of New York,
were selected to spread reaction
ary policies throughout the world
could be ignored if it were ’not
for the vicious spirit behind such
attacks.'
“Everyone knows when Izvestia
writes it is the Soviet Union
speaking. This unnecessary, false
and malicious attack follows a
number of others made "against
the Catholic Church. It appears
to be part of a deliberate plan of
misrepresentation aimed to divide
the people of countries where
Western civilization exists. These
attacks and other actions of the
Soviet Union are causing many
who believe in world peace to
wonder if the Soviet Union is sin
cere.
“To defent the Catholic Church
is unnecessary., To expose the
reason for the false attack is
necessary.
"It seems to me the Soviet
Union is trying to prevent world
peace through international action,
this and past attacks contrary to
the truth are the wrong journey
to take to contribute to future
world peace. Not only are they
false, but they are provocative:
they show a dictatorial attitude
and an attempt to impose the will
of the Soviet Union on the rest
of the world. Stalin and those
associated with him ought to learn
the lessons of history.
“Americans of all creeds respect
Cardinal-designate Spellman. He
occupies a position of respect and
affection in our minds. Reaction
ary. Cardinal Spellman is the
opposite. He has always been a
leader, as a Priest, as an Arch
bishop, and he will be a leader
as a Cardinal in progressive and
humane activities.
“The result, if not the purpose
of such attacks, is destructive—
in that they try to divide the forces
of decency throughout the world,
and such attacks impair the
chances of future world peace.
“It is not within my province
to give advice to Stalin, but if he
used common sense and if he
wanted to make a real eontri-

LIMERICK — (Radio) — Twite
within twenty-four hours, Eire—
important wayside stop on the
modern air road to Rome—had the
privilege of welcoming distin
guished Prelates on their way to
the Eternal City to receive the
Red llals during the forthcoming
Consistories.
The first airliner to come out
oi the western skies landed at
Shannon airport. It brought Car-
dinals-designatc Edward Mooney,
Archbishop of Detroit, and Sam
uel A. Stritch, Archbishop of Chi
cago.
The second liner carried Cardi-
nals-designate John J. Glcnnon,
Archbishop of St. Louis, Francis
J. Spellman, Archbishop of New
York, and Thomas Tien, S. V. D.,
Vicar-Apostolic of Tsingtao, China.
While the first airliner, the Star
of Cairo, took off again for Paris
after a slop lasting only 90 min
utes, the passengers of the second
liner, the Star of Rome, spent the
night in Eire and continued their
journey to Paris and Rome the
next day.
Eire's Prime Minister Earaon de
Valera headed the delegations to
welcome the American and Chi
nese Prelates to Ireland. With him
was Secretary Walshe of the De
partment of External Affairs and
other government officials. The
newly elected Bishop of Limerick,
the Most Rev. Patrick O'Neill, in
whose Diocese the airport is locat
