Belgian Priest Tells
Savannah Audience of
Nazi Prison Horrors
(Special to The Bulletin)
SAVANNAH, Ga. — An ac
count of the experiences of the
Rev. E. Froidure, a Belgian priest,
who was held a prisoner of the
Nazis in the infamous Dachau
concentration camp, was related
to an audience that attended a
program sponsored by the Savan
nah Chapter of France Forever,
in Jenkins Hall of Armstrong Ju
nior College on the evening of
February 12.
As Father Froidure does not in
clude English among the several
languages which ho speaks fluent
ly, a translation of his prepared
manuscript was read by Gibson
Jackson.
Father Froidure, who was intro
duced by Alex Thesmar, Belgian
consul in Savannah, is scheduled
to begin a speaking tour in this
country, beginning in New York,
but as his ship put in first at Sa
vannah. lie made his first appear
ance before an ‘American gather
ing here. *.
The priest from Belgium spent
three years in concentration
camps, at Borgerdoor, Esterwe-
gen and Dachau, because of his
participation in the underground
movement during the German oc
cupation of his home land.
The manuscript described the
last days before the arrival of
liberating Americans and the anx
iety that ltung over political pris
oners who were daily threatened
with death.
Before his arrest by the Gesta
po, Father Froidure had aided the
Jewish people of Belgium who
were particularly singled out by
the Nazis for mistreatment.- He
bid a number of Jewish children
at his home and in his parish
school, and secretly lodged many
members of the Allied forces who
were either on espionage mission
behind the enemy lines or who
had been forced to land in Ger
man occupied territory after para-
clmio escapes from planes which
