ATLANTA, GA. — Christo
pher Lynch, lyric tenor of con
certs, radio, and television, will
be heard in a concert under the
auspices of Sacred Heart Altar
Society and Mothers Club at the
Sacred Heart Auditorium, 310
Courtland Street, Atlanta, on
Thursday evening, December 9,
at 8:15 o’clock.
The young Irishman, a protege
of John McCormack, was born
in Rathkeale, Ireland, thirty
years ago,- and came to this
country in 1946. The son of a
Limerick stock farmer, Chris
topher sang in the local church
choir, as a boy soprano, and even
tually as a first tenor. His high,
clear vocie convinced the wife
of a Rathkeale banker that he
had potentialities as a singer,
and she encouraged in Christo
pher an interest in good music.
At an amateur .musicale in
Limerick, the O’Mara brothers,
well-to-do merchants and friends
of John McCormack, heard the
Rathkeale lad sing and deter
mined that McCormack should
meet him. The famous Irish
tenor, then in retirement, listen
ed to the O’Maras’ enthusiastic
reports of young Lynch, and a-
greed to grant him an audition.
When McCormack heard
Cristopher Lynch for the first
time, he said: “A beautiful voice,
and a fine upstanding Irishman.”
To the day he died in 1945,
John MvCormack’s interest in
Christopher Lynch never dimi
nished. He sent the boy to his
own teacher, Dr. Vincent O’Brien
of Dublin. McCormack coached
the young tenor in repertoire
and passed on to him the ideas
and theories he had garnered in
his own golden career. He be
queathed to Christopher Lynch
his little black book of lyrics

CHRISTOPHER LYNCH
that had been a familiar part of
every concert.
Christopher Lynch landed in
the United States on Friday, the
13th of September, and he has
never considered it an unlucky
day. With" him was his bride of
a few months, the former Dymp-
na Daly, “sweetest girl in Coun
ty Clare.”
The feel of New York’s 'side
walks had hardly settled under
his brogans, when he was facing
an expectant, friendly, but high
ly critical, audience in New
York’s shrine of music, Carnegie
Hall. It was a brilliant debut,
highlighted by the fact that not
only were New Yorkers atten
tive, but a coast-to-coast hook
up brought the entire United
States, into listening range.
The Limerick country boy
with his robust good looks, mod
est charm, and lyric tenor voice
completely captivated his audi
ence, even to the blase critics of
the press, one of whom was
moved to write, poetically: “He
sings. . . . and you can smell the
shamrock”. Lynch’s auspicious
debut was followed by the first
of many cross-country concert
tours, in which the newspaper
folk of other cities were in ac
cord with the praises of their
fellow writers in New York.
He has always been interested
in opera and, because his studies
in that direction in Italy were
interrupted in the interests of
his American career, he hopes
to return to Rome soon, and do
some serious operatic coaching.
“John McCormack wanted me to
do this”, he explains in his soft
Limerick brogue, “And I’m
thinking I should’t be disap
pointing him, after all he did
for me.”
