tainment of the goals and ideals
of NCCS.
NCCS on May 1, 1955, was sup
plying professional staff workers
as directors or associate directors
in 53 USO clubs and offices in
the United States and overseas—
in Rome, Naples, Casablanca,
Paris, Angeles (Philippine Is
lands), Anchorage (Alaska), the
Carribbean Maneuvers Area, and
Seoul (Korea). A further indica
tion of the scope of NCCS-USO
activities is indicated by the fact
that in 1954 NCCS distributed
433,864 religious articles to mem
bers of the armed forces through
chaplains and NCCS clubs, re
ported a building attendance of
over 4,000,000 persons and offer
ed 23,291 group activities to 2,-
223,977 persons. An average of
over 11,000 volunteers per month
donated over a million hours of
service in NCCS-USO units.
NCCS is supported primarily
by voluntary contributions to
USO by the American public
through Red Feather Community
Chests, United Funds and similar
groups. For this reason, a prin
cipal function of NCCS repre
sentatives on USO Committees
is to aid in seeing to it that
local Community Chest and
United Fund groups understand
the nature and vital importance
of USO and include USO in
their campaigns on a “fair-share”
basis. In adition to its USO acti
vities, NCCS serves also: Veter
ans Administration Hospitals,
young men and women about to
enter the military service, de
fense-production workers and
their families in critically over
crowded new communities.
Our Sovereign Pontiff has ex
pressed the desire that Catholic
organizations and volunteers
“regard this great work” of
NCCS “as an important apost-
olate, a real CATHOLIC AC
TION whose principal scope is
the salvation of souls”.

leaven of modern pharisees,” the
Holy Father declared:
“Social action, yes, and in due
season, with the fullest possible
union and determination. But no
action based on hatred or what
. . . ignores or denies . . . the
worth of the soul. It is of the
utmost importance to the Church
... to see the settlement of the
social problem, but certainly not
in such a manner that . . . souls
go to their ruin.”
In conclusion the Pope urged
Christian workers to think of
those outside their ranks “deceiv
ed by the malicious propaganda
. that the Church . . . wishes
to obstruct their progress to a
just improvement of their lot.”
