660 Children
Participate In
Schola Cantorum
SAVANNAH, Ga. — Reminis
cent of the Scholae Cantorum,
which characterized the Church’s
formal worship in centuries
passed, was the assemblage of
some six hundred children of
the Catholic Schools of Savan
nah and Chatham County in the
Cathedral of St. John the Bap
tist Wednesday morning at April
18th at 10:00 o’clock.
Representing the student bo
dies of the following schools,
Cathedral, Sacred Heart, Bles
sed Sacrament, St. Benedict's,
St. Mary’s, St. Anthony’s, Nati
vity of Thunderbolt and St.
Michael’s of Savannajh Beach,
these children were gathered
to sing the musical accompani
ment to the Solemn High Mass,
commemorating the Solemnity
of the Feast of St. Joseph,
Spouse of Mary, the Mother of
Christ and Patron of the Uni
versal Church.
Celebrant of the Mass was the
Reverend Andrew J. McDonald,
Chancellor of the Diocese of
Savannah-Atlanta; Deacon, the
Reverend Francis J. Donohue,
2nd Assistant Rector of the
Cathedral; Subdeacon, the Rev
erend James O’Sullivan, S.M.A.,
Assistant Pastor of St. Benedict’s
Church; Master of Ceremonies,
the Reverend Marvin J. LeFrois,
1st Assistant Rector of the Ca
thedral. The preacher on this oc
casion was the Rt. Rev. Msgr.
T. James McNamara, Rector of
the Cathedral. Participating in
the Liturgy of the Sanctuary
were the members of the Ca
thedral Altar-boys Association.
Under the direction of Sister
M. Barbara, R.S.M., Music Su
pervisor of Diocesan Schools,
with Mrs. Joseph C. Schreck,
Cathedra] Organist assisting, the
children sang as the Procession
al Hymn, “Ecce Sacerdos,” as
arranged by Montani and as
Recessional the Hymn, “Hall
Holy Joseph,” by Faber. In the
singing of the musical accom
paniment of the Mass they ren
dered the Missa Cum Jubilo in
the Gregorian Chant, the accept
ed musical form of the Church.
In all, there was the happy
blending of the Sanctuary and
the Choir, with the Choir not
detracting from the Sanctuary
but enriching it and bringing to
those, who were fortunate
enough to be present, a deeper
appreciation of the central act
of Catholic worship, which was
examplified at the altar.
This demonstration by the
children is ■ part of the music
program of the Catholic Schools
of the State, looking to a fuller
participation of the laity in the
Liturgy of the Church and seek
ing to realize the objectives of
Church Music as set down in
Papal documents on Sacred
Music, especially in the Motu
Proprio of Pope Pius XI.
SAVANNAH MEETING—Listening to campa gn instructions given by clerical and lay leaders
of the Bishop’s Fund Campaign, these priests an I men of Region I are shown following a regional
dinner meeting at Savannah. At these regional meetings, drive leaders emphasized forcibly that
nothing should stand in the way of the Bishop’s Crusade and that all other activities—diocesan
and parochial—should be relegated to the background in favor of the present activities.—(Andrew
