BIOGRAPHY
THE HOLY FIRE, Robert
Payne, (Harper, $5.00) reviewed
by Flannery O’Connor.
This is a book containing short
biographies of ten Fathers of the
Eastern Church, beginning with
Ciement of Alexandria in the
second century and closing with
Gregory Palamas in the four
teenth. As the author points out,
the Fathers, of the Eastern
Church sometimes seem remote
from us. “Their Christianity is
anger, more sudden . to praise.
They stressed many things we
have left unstressed.” However
this may be, these early Fathers
probably contributed as much to
the development of Christian
thought as Augustine and Je-
r o m e, and certainly Dionysius
the Areopagite, as the author
himself declares, influenced mys
tical theology in the West as
much as any Western Father. Al
together, the separation the au
thor makes between their Chris
tianity and ours would seem to
be exaggerated.
The Catholic reader will also
mark the author’s loose use of
such words as “worship.” In
several instances he gives the
impression that relics were wor
shiped in the early Church, rath-
not the same as ours. They were a I er than venerated. Excessive de
people of w arm imaginations,! votion may have been tolerated
more incandescent than the Fa
thers of the Western Church,
fiercer in denunciation, quicker in

locally at various times, but he
does not make it clear that image
and relic worship are not parts of
Christian doctrine.
The best parts of the book are
contributed by the Eastern Fa
thers when Mr. Payne allows
them to speak for themselves.
Fortunately, he is liberal in his

denly in Milan, Italy. At the
time he was Bishop of Kansas
City; previously he had been
Bishop of Great Falls, Montana.
The title of archbishop had been
bestowed in personal recognition
by the Pope. A native of Minne
sota, he spent the bulk of his 75
years in our Midwest, His inter
ests, inclinations, opportunities,
and abilities were, of such nature
that neither geographical nor
topical limitations delimited him.
Archbishop O’Hara was involv
ed in most significant ways in the
establishment of the National
Catholic Rural Life Conference
and of the National Confratern
ity of Christian Doctrine, in the
revision of the Baltimore Cate
chism and of the Ne.w Testament,
as well as in the undertaking to
render the entire Bible into
English directly from the original
languages, and in introducing: the
use of English into the ritual in
this country. Very evidently he
had superb powers of organiza
tion, a rare ability to grasp a
whole situation, to see the parts
in the whole, and to get all the
parts done. Difficulties were not
precisely hindrances or impedi
ments; they were merely part of
the route to be followed to ach
ieve any desired objective.
The biography is not remotely
d.efinitive in scope and nature,
nor could one expect it to be
with an interval of only some
eight months between the arch
bishop’s death and the book’s; ap
pearance in print. It does give,
in comparatively few pages, an
interesting and sympathetic
sweep of the archbishop’s life and
work. Beyond that very real ser
vice, the value of the biography
is limited.
THE RELUCTANT ABBESS, by
Margaret Trouncer, (Sheed &
Ward, $3.75), reviewed by Mary
Harty
This is a rather startling bi
ography of an unusual and com
plex . character, the notorious
Mere Angelique of Port-Royal.
With the deliberate falsification
of her age, Angelique’s avaricious
father forced her into a convent
at the age of seven. She becomes
Abbess of the famous Port Royal
des Champs at the age of eleven.
Mere Angelique, through a tor
mented and yet strangely earnest
pursuit of spirituality, wrought a
phenominal influence on the
France of the 17th century. Psy
chologically speaking, her life
and actions followed perfect
ly the pattern of the. frustrated
individual. Due to her lack of
education in the fundamentals of
her faith and the decadence of
the times, Mere Angelique was
easy prey to Jansenism and died
just before she would have been
excommunicated.
The author unfortunately
leaves Us with a feeling of an
excess of facts concerning her
subject: and the times and with
a dearth of feeling and interest.
Even the close friendship of Mere
Angelique and the great Jane de
Chantel fails to bring the con
trast and perspective that are so
badly needed. However, in spite
of this, the book is well worth
reading if but for the account of
the ease with which a heresy can
insinuate itself into a convent.
BLOODY MARY, by Theodore
Maynard. (Bruce, $4.95). Theo
dore Maynard, who died la^t
year, had a long list of excellent
biographies to his credit before
his writing career ended. This
one, published in 1955, is the sto
ry of the unhappy daughter of
Henry VIII of England and Cath
erine of Aragon. When Henry
divorced Catherine and married
Anne Boleyn, Mary’s life became
miserable, She was not even al
lowed to bid her mother fare
well when Catherine died. She
was in constant danger during
the brief reign of her half-bro
ther, Edward VI. In her own
five-year reign, she attempted to
restore the Catholic faith, with
the assistance of her prince-con
sort, Philip of Spain.
Mr Maynard wrote this bi
ography for the general reader,
but students of history and pro
fessional historians find it profit
able ,too, The author attempts, in
his vivid and detailed picture of
Mary and her times, to show that
Mary, who was a firm and faith
ful Catholic, had the spiritual
welfare of England at heart and
tried to follow the light of truth,
even though she made some se
rious blunders in the methods
she used.
