The Honorable Christopher Co
lumbus,
Admiral of the Ocean-Sea
Dear Admiral,
We, the American people, owe
you an enormous debt of grati
tude which, we are sorry to say,
we cannot pay to you personally.
There is, in fact, only one way in
which this debt can be paid. That
is, by living up to the high stand
ards that have been set for us
here in America. We owe this
debt to you because the discov
ering of the Western Hemi
sphere is, without a doubt, one
of the all time greatest achieve
ments of man. Our debt is all
the greater because we recognize
that so stupendous, so far reach
ing was your act that it could not
possibly have been accomplished
by a lesser man.
During that period in which
you lived, adventure, though in
the heart of every man, found
manifestation only in the ranks
of nobility. You, belonging to a
poor family, had little or no for
mal education. Yet, you and your
brother, Bartholomew, were es
pecially intelligent. Becoming a
seaman at the age of fourteen,
you had a remarkable knowledge
of the sea. Your brother present
ed to you a truly ridiculous idea
. . . that the world was not flat,
but round. After mulling over
this astonishing fact, you decided
that he was right. With few con
vincing facts to your credit, the
only working factor you had was
the courage of your convictions.
Much hardship and many obsta
cles were thus presented, which
few men could have overcome.
Seeing you surmount and profit
by these, young people the world
over know they have a truly
great example to follow.
Your fascinating story has
come from many pens. Some
have portrayed you as a calculat
ing mercenary seeking only per
sonal gain. Others have described
you as a mystic, moved by super
natural forces; the “Christbear-
er” to carry Christianity to un
known lands and peoples. Yet all
biographers are agreed that Chris
topher Columbus was a man pos
sessed of great moral and physi
cal courage, that you had a ten
acity of purpose seldom, if ever,
equaled, that you were intensely
loyal to the cause you served,
that you were honest with your
self; and more than all these, you
had an all-consuming and abid
ing faith in Christianity, the
Christian Ideal, and the Christian
way of life. Here then is the key
stone of your character, as we of
today see it. You had extraordi
nary zeal, knowledge, persever-
enee, courage, love, and above
all else, you had faith. For these
traits that helped us so well we
are eternally grateful.
Without such a faith you could
hardly have endured the years of
disappointments, the rebuffs, pov
erty, scorn, and ridicule, and yet
maintain the courage to finally
achieve your dream.
During two decades of wearily
trudging from Court to Court,
your staunch faith never wav
ered, and was finally rewarded.
An humble frier, Fr. Juan Perez,
and Queen Isabella caught and
helped you to fulfill your dream.
Then, in thanksgiving and pe
tition you rechristened your flag
ship the Santa Maria, (the Holy
Mary). With much hope, the com
mand was finally given to weigh
anchor “in the name of the Holy
Trinity.” This spirit of faith was
upheld by the singing on each
evening of the voyage of the
Salve Regina. It is truly reveal
ing that after seventy days and
seventy nights at sea, after pre
venting mutiny in a fearful crew,
your first act should be the nam
ing of the first found island “San
Salvador,” (Holy Savior). The
second found was named “Santa
Maria de la Concepcion,” (Holy
Mary of the Immaculate Concep
tion). Then, and only then, did
you honor your patrons by nam
ing the third and fourth found
islands “Fernandina” and “Isa
bella,” respectively.
As we see it, you, Christopher
Columbus, were a man rich in
all the physical and mental at
tributes necessary to qualify
yourself for this tremendous un
dertaking. And you did integrate
these many qualifications with a
pattern of Christian faith, secure
in the knowledge that without
such a faith in Jesus Christ all
human knowledge and effort are
meaningless.
We, in these United States,
have been abundantly blessed in
our political ancestry. From the
time of the discovery, through
the many crises which have be
set us as infant nation and on
into our maturity among' the
nations of the world, we have :
been able to steadfastly cling to
the Christian principles of. justice
and the dignity of the human
person on which our forebearers
had the wisdom and courage to
erect our national government.
Our Declaration of Independence
sets forth principles of Christian
Justice never before found in a
political document. Our Consti
tution and Bill of Rights are the
greatest emancipation proclama
tion ever known to man.: Chris
topher Columbus, you did guide
the minds, and could well have
guided the hands in the writing
of these two documents that are
an intrinsic part of America to
day.
And so, Admiral Columbus, the
debt is not yet cancelled: But if
we know and can teach to the
present and future generations
what a priceless heritage we pos
sess through the example of your
life, we will insure the hope of
freedom and liberty for all the
downtrodden masses of the earth
Sincerely yours,
YOUNG AMERICA.
