Two nuns walk quietly past the burned-out and still smoulder-

College Residents of Ottumwa, la., a city of 33,000 have vol
unteered to help rebuild the institution which was a $2 million
loss Many local families have opened their homes to now home
less students while the nuns and many students are housed in an

services for Mrs. Jane Moore
Freese were held October 3rd at
St. Francis Xavier Church, Rev.
James M. Cummings, S.M., of
ficiating.
Survivors are her husband, Al
bert G. Freese, four sisters, Miss
Lillian Moore, Miss Inez Moore,
Mrs. P. S. Ogilvie and Mrs. Sara
Morse; two brothers, Alton Moore
and W. L. Moore, all of Savan
nah; two half sisters, Mrs. Free
man Sheppard, Dublin and Mrs.
James Swan, Americus, two half
brothers, F. A. Moore and H. H.
Moore, Savannah.

services for. Mrs. Elizabeth Hill
Herb were held October 4th at
the Cathedral of St. John the
Baptist.
She has no immediate surviv
ors.
Meeting Of
Altar Society
At Griffisi
GRIFFIN — The Sacred Heart
Altar Society held their regular
monthly meeting at the Rectory
on Oct. 8th with Mrs. R. Piland,
president, presiding.
Father McCormack opened the
meeting with prayer.
The secretary and treasurer’s
reports were read and approved.
Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Wood and
Mrs. Lawson gave a most infor
mative report on the Diocesan
Council meeting they attended in
Atlanta on Sept. 21st. A Requiem
Mass will be offered for Father
John Walsh, who died on Oct.
4th in Boston, Mass. He was the
first resident pastor of Sacred
Heart Church, and will be re
membered for his splendid work
not only in the parish, but in oth
er civic affairs in Griffin.
Mrs. Jones gave a report on the
success of the pantry shower giv
en the Sisters and thanked all
members taking part.
Mrs. Joe Mansour, Jr., and
Mrs. George Morales were wel
comed as new members. Mrs.
Jones was hostess for the social
hour which followed the business
meeting.

ian were held October 8th at the
Church of the Most Blessed Sac
rament, Rev. Thomas Brennan of
ficiating.
Survivors are her husband,
John W. Moyian, and daughter,
Mrs. John L. Walsh, Thunder
bolt, one son, J. Emmett Moyian,
Baton Rouge, La.; one brother,
Augustus Robertson, Jr., Savan
nah; six grandchildren, and sev
eral nieces and nephews.
Priest-astronomer Father Mar
tin F. McCarthy, U. S. repre
sentative for the Vatican Ob
servatory, is an expert on
galactic structure, or “Milky
Way” astronomy. A native of
Lowell, Mass., he was ordained
a Jesuit in 1954 at Weston Col
lege, and received his doctor's
degree in astronomy at George
town University in 1951. Re
turning to the Vatican Observa
tory early next year, Father
McCarthy has conducted stu
dies throughout the past year
and a half at leading observa
tories in the U. S. and Canada.
He estimates there are 200-bil-
lion stars in the Milky Way.
