Dr. Sethna responds to "The stupidity of Parking 'Services'"
Dear Editor:
Mr. Jacob Lowell,
in his opinion column
entitled, Racketeering on
campus: The stupidity of
Parking “Services” (Issue
date: 9/5/07), is entitled to
his opinion about parking
on campus, and indeed
even entitled to be upset.
His opinion about what he
calls the “$35/S2O combo
citation” is also something
to which he is entitled,
and a conversation about
the appropriateness of
the approach used is
not unreasonable in the
proper forum.
However, while I
Students respond to "The stupidity of Parking 'Services'"
‘This is a very well written article. The
ideas portrayed in the article really make
one think how ridiculous parking services
really is. This article should be sent to
every part of higher management at the
university.”

and his “certainty” of the
motivations in the second

are factually incorrect. In
this instance, the opinion
is decidedly uninformed.
The change from stickers
to hangtags came because
of a concerted push
from the *students*
and a previous Student
Government Association.
Some faculty and
administrators were not
in favor of this change,
but because the students

“I fully agree with this article. Just this week,
I was ticketed for an improperly displayed
hanging tag, which was hung from my rear
view mirror with the date and permit number
fully visible. I tried to appeal but it was denied.
I have found a dead end for complaining about
the bogus tickets that office writes. However,
I did find many interesting figures about the
department, and this article. Anyone know
how to better complain, or know someone to
file a complaint with that is above the parking

approved.
Arguments are
often strengthened, and
clearly easier to sustain
when they are based on
research. In this case,
when an author ascribes
very specific motives for
actions, the responsibility
for informed opinions is
especially important in a
university environment.
In the future, it might
be appropriate to check
one’s facts before being
so “certain” and ascribing
motivations where all
the evidence is to the
contrary.

significantly, words like
“bums,” “cowardly,”
“vandalism,” and
“useless employees,”

nothing to advance the

probably written in the

and motives. Let us use
this incident as a teaching
and learning moment.
The fact that UWG moved
to hangtags because of
the students’ opinions
proves that change is
possible when conducted
in an orderly manner.
Those who desire change
could conduct themselves
civilly and professionally
(as the previous SGA did
when they asked for the
change to hangtags) and
effect change in that way.
